Big Proposal in NH

Terrain and natural snowfall with an expansion could make the Balsams a pretty cool destination but literally every major skier market in the north east would pass at least 3-5 other major resorts before making it that far north. This project has been a long shot since its inception but for Otten reviving this area seems to be some kind of life long goal. The Balsams Resort property deserves a proper revival, it is a legacy grand hotel on par with Mount Washington Hotel but my feeling is that its only pathway to success is as an ultra luxe, ultra exclusive high end resort property, not slope side condos for the masses.

Vail could come to the rescue if they still get access to cash when the time comes.
Um, I hope this was ironic sarcasm, considering how the incompetents at that company have probably spent the last few years dealing with the disastorous Peak purchase. Notice how they didnt go near the Jay bidding, and that place came ready made with a summer biz.

Other people's money. That's Otten's biz model. He cant be charged with crimes after ASC, because he didn't commit any, from what I can tell. He's a grifter, who doesn't care that he left businesses in bankruptcy and shareholders and RE "investors" screwed over, he got his, in spades, and here we go again. Brings to mind a certain politician with current well known legal problems, but, we won't go there. There's a fool born every minute, and this guy is a wealthy man living off those fools. It's a very American thing. Snake oil was sold the same way in the nineteenth century.

I think interest rates at these levels and now our banking system looking real shaky for a while will keep this project stuck in his PowerPoint fantasy world. Not that he'll stop trying. What's he got to lose? Its other people's money! Monorail! Monorail!

That market has Davos, St. Moritz, and Beaver Creek, among others.

Skiing needs small, inexpensive, accessible family hills around population centers. Fixed grip lifts on 600 ft hills, Magic carpets, surface lifts, tent sales and swap meets for cheap gear, that kind of stuff.
Sounds a bit like Togg. No need for a dang magic carpet though.

They ain't buying nuthin' for some time, in America, unless somebody makes an offer they can't refuse. My guess is they start dumping small mountains in the near future.

That goes along with ...“if they still get access to cash when the time comes."
Lather, rinse, repeat.

Personally, I don’t think another big east coast destination resort is what skiing needs. Skiing needs small, inexpensive, accessible family hills around population centers. Fixed grip lifts on 600 ft hills, Magic carpets, surface lifts, tent sales and swap meets for cheap gear, that kind of stuff.
Strong agree. When you look at how packed Magic and MRG get, there is a hunger for back to basics. Part of the problem is that the areas that get natural snow and are near population centers (ADK and Vt.) have the most onerous permitting imaginable, but I really think there could be money in a Tbar accessing natural gnar, with a bunny hill and a park at the bottom. That crowd gets a boner for rustic lodges (I should know) so a pole barn with some wood burning stoves, a grill for making quesadillas and a plank of wood for serving $10 IPAs and you're in business.
