Belleayre Conditions

That looks Epic.

Thankfully 6 opened a little after 10 so that took the line away from 7. I suspect there was a line there before they opened as people were taking lightning up and skiing down to 6 since the Gondi was on wind hold. That opened probably 1030.

Mostly forgot about the wait once we got skiing, it was heavy but fun. Best we’ve had so far this year! Before the storm there was a 2” layer of ice encrusting everything, this new snow definitely helped the base.

I had a fun day at Belle today.

Utsayantha and Cathedral Brook were roped off, but pretty much everything else was open. There were some baby bumps on Winnisook and packed powder everywhere else. Very little ice.

For groomers, Yahoo and Algonquin skied best, though Lift 7 was closed so you had to skate to get to them. There were some nice powder stashes around Horseshoe Pass and mid mountain where all the blacks empty out into blues.

The temperature (at my car) never got above 32, so hopefully it stays nice through the coming cold spell. Planning to back there this weekend.

Donny’s an all around great guy. Super friendly, great skier AND instructor who is really fun to ski with and learn from. I did the weekend workshop with him for a couple years 15+ years ago back when it came with the season pass.

He got tired of the current situation at Belleayre and left 3 or 4 years ago, as did/are many long time employees because they are unhappy with the management(and the new #2 guy they just hired is only hurting not making things better!). Big loss for the Mtn when Donny left. He’s retired from his real job now and skiing during the week.

Reading your Cathedral article brings back some good memories. It’s also a stark reminder of how much the vibe on the mountain has changed and not for the good. The Beast was awesome! It ended up succumbing to an electrical fire.

The Beast is something like that would never be considered today, nor would the mountain manager or ski school director even think about skiing down to Pine Hill much less bring a member of the media down there.

Back then the priority was skiers and skiing. I don’t really even know what their priority is now, but I do know that no lift loaded until 9:45 on Monday after 10” of snow and that’s unacceptable. They were short staffed on the upper mountain lifts while multiple lifties were shoveling out the magic carpets in the learning area and the line at 7 stretched all across onteora and down almost to the lodge.
Bandit, Don subbed in when I was doing the weekend clinic maybe five years ago. Awesome skier. Where does he ski for fun now, Belle or somewhere else? Great guy and phenomenal skier.

Belle…he was there today. I made this post then opened Facebook and first post is a friend mentioning a great day there today and skiing with Don. Did big brother Facebook know I was talking about him here or was it random????

Phenomenal skier is right. I really like his instructing style too; he’d explain something, demo it, then go ski and have fun. No need to stop every 10 feet and talk about it.

It's been 12 years but that's what I remember too. I almost bought a pair of his Elan skis, hoping some of his skillz would transfer over to me.

Monday' snow really helped the mountain. True packed powder. Everything was soft and edgeable yesterday. Not what typically passes as packed powder in the NE.
