AMR Requiring Parking Reservations in Keene Valley

go to slightly out-of-the-way places that the masses don’t go

This is the key IMO. Widen your definition of fun beyond the definition used by the masses at Mt Snow.

The Siamese Ponds Wilderness is generally empty.

ADK talks a big game about getting people to spread out beyond the High Peaks, but their members seem singularly focus on becoming a 46er.

In general, I don’t think anyone should have to pay fees to use public land. When there is “stuff” on that land (state-run golf courses, ski areas, beach facilities, national park infrastructure, etc.) then I think they should charge enough money to cover their cost of operations (or less than cost, because I like the idea that the government just subsidizes fun stuff for its citizenry. This is my “Parks should be free, we pay taxes” argument).
I agree with this part, for sure. Paying for real infrastructure is fine, but pay to walk is a bit much, even if there is some trail building or staffing behind it. I equate trail building with sidewalks, and rangers patrolling with EMS services. You don't pay to walk a sidewalk.....

That’s also why Speculator is spectacular.

I would totally pay for a parking spot in the Adirondacks.

@Low Angle Life I've paid $$ to park at both Minnewaska and Sam's Point, but this year with the covid, the crowds have got a bit outta control. People parking on the shoulder and just going for it, they don't care whether they get a ticket.

Parking at trailheads is a scarce resource, so it makes sense to price it and regulate it. There's also safety concerns with having too many cars on some of these roads driving around looking for parking that doesn't actually exist. From what I can tell, they aren't requiring reservations for hiking, only for parking in certain locations, so you could still be dropped off and not need to pay. It's the same difference between requiring reservations for skiing, or for parking at ski areas.

kind of. it is not like being dropped off at the mall. ski resorts and hiking destinations are usually a few hours away. who is going to drop you off?

Went from 11th Mnt trailhead through to ski bowl over the summer--2 kids were tented at the leanto but that's all we saw for 16+ miles. Was actually cool to literally backpack to our doorstep. Very quiet.
