What I've learned is that a parent who asks nicely for a Level 3 instructor is more likely to be assigned to a pretty experienced instructor, even if they aren't Level 3. At small hills, there are usually quite a few Level 2 instructors with lots of experience who are very good.@MarzNC That's great advice. I never thought to ask about the instructor qualifications. I haven't skied at Plattekill in 22 years. It's about 2 1/2 hours from home, so that's not too bad.
It's possible to pass the PSIA Level 1 exams after a couple weeks of instructor training at one hill. The idea is that Level 1 instructors are qualified to teach beginners. Obviously no comparison to a Level 3 instructors who has been teaching for 15+ years. I watched my Massanutten instructor do a never-ever class one holiday weekend. He was helping out. It was fascinating how he managed to get all those adults doing basic wedge turns and stops.
