Abandoned Catskill Resorts

Fairly recent with some good photos

That’s one lost area that I had a chance to ski before it closed.

Anyone ever ski around there or Roundtop? I’m hoping to check it out along with a trip up to Kaaterskill High Peak. Anyone with info they could share?
Same dude with the snowmobile video did a video of Kaaterskill Falls. Looks nice.

I will never forget being in a huge conference center meeting when the activities coodinator came over the PA with THIS message ......" A an exercise specialist will be leadinga session called SEXERCISES out at the Main Pool in 10 minutes". Well the stampede outta that damn meeting was a sight to behold .

I get out to the pool and see this 60 something grey haired aging bimbette on her platform with a headset demonstrating her prowess in flexibility hahahhh We still laugh at that experience today

That brings back fond memories of early cable.

I think we're watching something like this for a lot of northeast skiing. A lot of hills have gone under and hotels and motels near existing resorts are empty and rotting, like that blight on Rt.4 near Killington. Cheap airfare and packages to the west and even Europe.

This is a pretty nutty country. We produce booms and busts like fast food burgers, leaving ruins behind in just thirty or forty years. One wonders if a few of the big cities out west will look like that in ten to twenty years when the water finally runs out.

And the most recent nails in the coffin, Airbnb and VRBO.

You wanna talk effing redonkulous : Just came back from visiting an old haunt Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake where my grandparenst built a magnificent " Gingerbread style " Cottage in the early 1900's at The Lighthouse on Verona Beach ,

So the Oneda NATION built a resort called THE COVE in a shitty area on the damn Barge Canal where years ago we kept our boat in a marina . NOW mind you Oneida Lake was just named the 5th Most Polluted Lake in America with toxic algae blooms that required the ENCON to close the State Park Beach recently . The canal is a shithole too BUT these geniuses are CHARGING 800 Bucks A NIGHT with a minimum stay of 7 nights required !!!... Now addtax to that you're talking over 6 k a week then you have fees on top ( a cleaning fee and refundable damage deposit ) on top to stay in a effing toxic shithole .

What idiot would ever stay there ??

Gamblers?

I dont think Airbnb and VRBO have effected the short term ski market for anything less than large homes that can hold 6-10 or more people, and by short term, I mean a week or less, which is a typical ski trip. I tried to use both during my Colorado trip last Spring, but fees and taxes just make them uncompetitive with hotels. Booking.com is in on that game, and bait you with a nice price, but, bottom line sometimes is double that advertised come on. I have used Airbnb in Europe for a few four week stays, and that's where you save money. First, most give you a nice discount for two weeks to a month or more, and the fees are spread out over that period. But, you're stuck living out of one location. First world problem.

I'll be amazed if that place makes it. That said, they certainly have deep pockets, the house always wins.
