However you define it buffalo is squarely not upstate. I don't know what buffolians call themselves... Does anyone?
 
It depends where you live. I had a client who worked at NYU near 14th St. After 9/11 she told me she had to move “as far away as possible.” She took a job at Columbia on 118th St.
FWIW Buffalo is western NY but it feels more like eastern Ohio.
