Retired People: What Surprised You?

You need more hip hop in your life. Here, I wrote these bars for you:

They can’t stop my shine, tho the haters wanna dull me

Talking shit from the stool at the sports bar (Tully’s)

I be on a plane like my name Captain Sully

You be skiing in the rain, and you washed like a gully

😜
Don't quit your day job ....yo

Not much surprise that the article is about the geezers at Alta.

I got enough nerve to say hello to the folks at the round Wild Old Bunch table at Alf's at Alta a couple seasons ago. I was over 65 by then. Said hello to one of the older members at Alf's last week . . . he's 91. He prefers to sit at a regular table instead of the "meeting" table. There were 3-4 other 70+ at that table. They are old enough to not be interested in making new ski friends. I said hello to the 82yo who did sit at the round table. He was surprised there weren't more people.

From the article:
" . . .
Skiing all day isn’t as important as getting 7 or 10 incredible runs. Moguls? Forget about it. Forty years ago I was a bumper. It’s soft snow and groomers now.
. . ."

That thinking doesn't apply to me. I didn't learn to ski steep bumps until about five years ago . . . after starting to take lessons more regularly after age 55. Not trying to ski them fast, rather to "flow" like water down the slope going "3 miles per hour" as one of my Taos instructor says. That instructor is over 80 and not retired yet. Although he doesn't ski much in the afternoons any more. The instructor who an intermediate had who was over 85 a couple years ago retired last season.

I am retiring in July. Will report back. Ha Ha
You say that every year!

Surprises?

• I am getting more powder then I ever had. By a mile. I realize that a big part of that is this awesome season in lake effect land. The way most people count powder I'd probably have 12 powder days. The way I count, it's probably 6 or 8. Over the last 20 years, for me 3 powder days in a season was good. 28 ski days total to date, I'd call 20 of them excellent. Lots of great new non-powder snow in the mix (ha). I've never hit 40 days in my ski career, this year it's a real good possibility.

• I am so stoked now when I'm in the Adk, not so much here in NJ. There is soo much more (for me) to do up there. I'm doing about 50/50 now, it's not enough, but the reality is, it will be that until we move this summer. I'm bored here without a job. I am trying to create a job being my wife's executive assistant. I handle 99% of all logistics. Next week or maybe the week after, I'm going to paint the interior of the house in the Adk.

• For whatever reason, I still have my work email installed. I haven't been getting notifications but for some reason I got this today:

This ^^ monthly meeting (and two others like it) were the things I liked the least about my job.

When that notification popped up every month, by the end of my career I felt UGH. Honestly, it's a big reason I retired now. I couldn't take it anymore. I'm not blaming any of the participants, it was just pressure. I felt relentless pressure.

Anyway today when the notice randomly popped up, I smiled, and remembered why. I hope the woman I hired to replace me had a good day.
