It takes on a whole other meaning for horses, and a lot more work. They need to be outside moving around, and will be fine in subzero Temps as long as there is no wind, and they have lots of hay and water.
However, with the windchill as cold as it is supposed to be, mine will be inside, with lots if hay and water. This also means lots more poop inside, and that they will be like a coiled spring when they get to go back out, ready for a good buck.
We hit a low of eleven bee low this morning.
Walking on the snow sounds like Styrofoam.
The smell of woodstove smoke lays low.
Finally, a winter morning.
Oh yeah. Most nights, we're getting a half inch or an inch of snow. Lake Placid generally gets more than Saranac Lake. It's been invaluable for freshening up the trails, but it ain't a big dump.
First time in 2 years that I've been able to ski the 1980 Olympic trails at Mt van Hoevenberg. Thin cover, just enough for good skis. Snowmobilers are getting out here too. Some nights they're riding right past my house to the rail trail. Last winter, they had bupkis.
Meanwhile, the high was 30 degrees today at my house near Raleigh, NC. I'm glad I'm a skier so that I've got jackets warm enough for going out to do errands. Opted for indoor rock climbing with the teen who I took to Massanutten for MLK weekend. Just as well we couldn't stay there last night even though she didn't have school on Tuesday. It was cold enough yesterday with the high about 16 degrees.
Snow in the trees on the ridge was from Sunday. Snow in the trees between the trails was from Jan. 5-6. Never been able to go tree skiing for two weeks straight before. Pic is from Jan. 12 after 8 inches of dense snow. Even more fun on Jan. 20 with a couple inches of fresh snow on top of a skier packed base that covered up the small stuff pretty well. Essentially no melting in the trees even on a couple of warmer days last week.
Could be up to 2 inches at my house by morning. Perhaps 4 inches on the NC coast! It's been cold enough for relatively long that the snowflakes are sticking everywhere.
Glad my schedule for Massanutten over MLK weekend meant I drove home last night instead of tonight.
