Big Tupper Thread

Today, I drove out to Big Tupper. Thought I'd run the ski trails and get a look at the lodge, see what shape it's in. Unfortunately, the end of Ski Tow Rd is gated and posted. I shoulda thought of that.

Past the golf club, parts of Ski Tow Rd have frost heaves and potholes that will loosen your fillings. Wondering if that will need to be addressed if BT is to reopen.

I ran from the golf course up to the end of the old Big Tupper nordic ski trail. It ends right by the gate. I don't know if this building below is the lodge or something else. I stood at the end of the hiking trail and zoomed in big with the camera, that's why the building is so large in the photo.

@Harvey would an interview with the new owners be of interest. Might have found one on Google.

Owners from Jackson, NJ...interesting, being that I'm from not too far from there

Crowdsourcing request: have you skied Big Tupper? What was the appeal? Special vibe like Platty or MRG? Something else?

For an article I hope to write for NYSB. Thank you.

I never skied there. Everything I have to share is hearsay.

In it's heyday, BT seemed like a normal local family+ place. I'd be very curious to know the percentage of skier visits that wouldn't be considered local. My guess is it was mostly local and north country. When WAS the BT heyday?

I grew up in the 70's and early 80's in Clinton NY playing hockey, and a lot of my friends were skiers and they skied at Woods Valley, Snow Ridge, and McCauley for day trips and Big Tupper was a place that many went for a weekend or vacation weeks. In the early mid 90's Big Tupper used to offer free skiing on Mondays for any Adirondack Park residents.
In 1998 I was the GM of The Mountain and Boardertown, which was an amazing store in North Creek, and we also ran the rental/retail shops for Big Tupper which was then being operated by Peter Day of Tupper Lake. The lodge was pretty run down at that point.

That WAS an amazing store !! My summer weekends were canoeing 13th Lake and stopping into North Creek. What ever happened to the store ?

The leaders of the Town of Johnsburg chased the owner (who was also the owner of the Copperfield Inn, and the Ski Bowl before it was sold) out of town.
Kinda ironic, in that he hadn't asked for any grants or subsidies, but yet he was not liked mostly because he was not from town...🤷‍♂️(n)
