What is your most positive memory of skiing in NY?

My return-to-ski time at GP, about 15 years ago. I went with my son, in the drizzle at night. It had been probably 20 years since I skied. I started on the sub-bunny slope learning areas, and progressed to some of the greens. I still remember the huge grin I had on my face as we skied in the mist down towards the lift. The next year, I bought skis and a season pass.

My other favorite memory is one of the closing days at GP. It was in the 20s overnight, and a bluebird day. I got 5 really nice runs down Iliad, staying in the shade, and then went home, put on shorts and hung up my hammock for the season.

1. Learning to ski on the North Country School private ski hill 1968-70
2. Powder day at Plattekill, Feb 2022
3. First and only tele lesson at Belleayre (using daughter's boots & skis), mid-Dec 2017

First time on skis ~55 years ago.
Went night skiing at Song & bailed out on the first run at the bottom as I didn’t want to dent cars in the parking lot. Learned picking up speed is easy, it’s the turning and stopping is where the skill comes in.

Spring skiing at Gore after a ‘90s Nor’easter.
Gore had about 3 feet of new snow late in the season. Broke a boot buckle on bumps, but after a pit stop repair in the parking lot was back at it. There were bikinis to boot.

Wide Opening Day ~3 feet deep before Thanksgiving Day at Song <10 years ago.

I was just thinking about this- when GP opened before Thanksgiving. :)

my kids playing in the cave glades. it all came together that winter. all those years of dragging those little bastards to the mountain finally paid off.

of course tucks comes to mind as well as first trip up the single chair.

Still having dreams about that day! That’s a once in a lifetime snowstorm 45” who …. Hoooo!
Dude you were there? The best skiing I have done. This wasn't first tracks skiing. From about 10:30 until dark it was off the hook.

Saturday , I ran out of gas 2 ish.

It was comical watching people floundering around outside the lodge. If you stepped off the packed area you were stuck up to your waist.

I remember multiple laps on Ridge and Twister, in absolute blower conditions. Some ice to start and bottomless by afternoon.

Each time we came back to the top, previous tracks were almost invisible. It was easy to slice it, skied up or fresh.

Matt-in-a-whiteout

To get that much snow in 12 hours, there had to be periods of 4+ inches an hour.

Saturday was great too, but not effortless like Friday.
