ORDA Funding

ORDA passed resolution #545 for Van Ho sliding improvements estimated at $96,000,000.00 last Friday.

That’s quite a few zeroe$.
What a joke.
Here is an article from April, 2021:

"Van Hoevenberg upgrade meant to ‘last 100 years’

The final price tag for New York taxpayers was around $80 million, ORDA spokesperson Elise Ruocco confirmed this month. That’s nearly double the $40-50 million estimate ORDA gave in February 2019, which had risen to $60 million by the time site work began that June. Since that time, ORDA’s board approved several change orders for unforeseen expenses at Van Hoevenberg costing at least $2.75 million."

So the 2021 $80 million upgrade at Van Hoevenberg that was meant to last 100 years only lasted 3 years. What are they going to spend this next 96 million on?
Maybe another $32 million lodge? ORDA is completely out of control.
The 2023 Winter World University Games were a complete failure as a draw, so lets give the Lake Placid ORDA clown show another $96 million for Van Hoevenberg? That's $176,000,000 in 5 years for a venue that might see 40k visitors/year. To be fair, if we go by visitor counts, Gore/WF/Belleayre should be each seeing somewhere around 1 billion in upgrades each over the next 5 years.

Wow, what insanity.

That $96 million is an eye popping number, but from reading the articles, the refrigeration plant for the sliding track is 46 years old. The sliding track is 24 years old. IDK what maintenance has been done on it in the last few years.

Insofar as the for 2026 Winter Olympics, it appears that a sliding track is getting built in Milan / Cortina.

If Lake Placid is gunning for a future Olympic bid, I think it would have to be shared. You look at all these recent Olympic or World Championship venues for cross country skiing. The start finish areas are in a humongous stadium, like a football or track and field stadium. No room for that in the current configuration at the Ho. But I guess you should never say never.

As to @x10003q 's post above, the UCI WHOOP mountain bike world cup is bringing beaucoup $$ in for the weekend.
