Big SNOW Conditions and TRs

I made my second-ever visit to Big Snow on Monday, ...
After 2 enjoyable runs from the top on the non-park side, the unload on third chair ride ended my day when the skier to my left on the lift wanted turned right go to the park side and skied over my tips trying to get there. My attempted wedge to slow to let him pass in front of me wasn't going to happen at that point and I went down awkwardly... My knee stayed sore and stiff, supported well enough to walk carefully by the soft knee brace I had on for skiing.
Dang.
Glad yer OK. Yer soft knee brace mighta helped ya so it wasn’t worse.

Gravity can bite ya especially when yer not expecting it. Not to brag but I had a yard sale on a bunny hill ❄️ whale last year while going <5mph. Nothing was hurt but had to spin the goggles around & pick up all the yard sale offerings (both skis & both poles).
Heal well.

Not a yard sale:

The worst crash I ever had was a slow motion deal on roller skis at Lake Denmark. Like @tirolski , going less than 5 mph. I don't know what caused it. Got my bell rung and contusions and gashes all around one eye socket. Looked like I'd been in a bar fight. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, concussion for sure.

Sorry to hear you got cut off. I went to Big Snow for the first time 2 weeks ago and I did notice that the unload at the top is tight. There is little room to make adjustments. I hope your recovery is smooth and quick!

Thanks, everyone. When I want to turn at the top in the opposite direction to the side of the chair I'm on, I pretty much always ask and make sure we have a plan about how to cross over at the top. These guys on my left (late teens) were chatting together so we never had that conversation.

Another interesting thing about my short Big Snow day was our chair mate on the ride up before the one where I got hurt. We rode up with a younger kid, probably 13 or 14, who was there from Europe (guessing a Scandinavian country) with a group of others Europeans getting some pre-season on snow training in on the terrain park side. I wish I was able to learn more, but it's a short ride and he didn't mention this until we were more than half way up. We did have the conversation about how to cross over and he zipped off the lift and crossed well ahead of us.

Glad the injury wasn't too bad.

When it's not that busy so that there isn't much of a lift line at Big SNOW, I'm not particularly trying to share a chairlift with certain people. Most of the time I've been there, the liftie isn't making any attempt to help fill chairs. I may ask a single to join who seems interested and might be fun to chat with.

Had a good time at Big SNOW in late July when I was doing a short vacation trip with a teen staying at Shawnee. Her mother started her on skis at Massanutten when she was a tween and she was a natural. Mother was willing to pay for the full package so that all the teen needed to bring was ski socks, gloves, and her helmet. Turned out she was warm enough in a sweatshirt and no gloves. I wanted to go to make use of a 6-pack I bought on sale in July 2024. Those now expire a year after first use.

I usually go starting around noon on a Sunday. Mostly in order to meet up with Ski Divas who are working and can't get to Big SNOW midweek because they live over an hour away. We met up with a Diva from Philly who I hadn't met in person before. We arrived around 10:00 so that we could walk around American Dream. Not much is open before 11:00 besides Big SNOW. The teen hadn't been to a mega-mall before. There are still plenty of empty areas, but in general the place felt more like a sustainable business venture than a couple years ago. By the time we left around 3:00, the place was packed.

After an early lunch at the food court, we headed to Big SNOW at noon. Arriving early meant I got a great parking space on the ground level of Lot A, close to the door next to the elevator. Her ticket started at 12:15 but when they aren't busy, it's easy to go in a little early. In any case, a 2-hour session doesn't start until you go through the doors onto the snow. The woman we met up with arrived around noon and it took a while for her to find a parking space on an upper level of Lot A.
