Can’t get lost unless you fall over the guard rail! Did this tour on a snowy windy day since the sketchiest part is driving there on slippery snowy roads.
Good news came in the form of a fresh 6 inches overnight. First car at the trailhead and broke trail on the up. Nice and quiet all around with only the crunch squeak crunch of snow under skins.
There was shelter from wind most of the way up until Wilmington turn, where it turned into full whiteout. So, turned around just after that.
Bad news was that cold/dry snow combined with mellow grades meant not much sliding downhill. More like a brisk kick and glide. Snowy conditions also meant not much of a view. Fortunately ran into another skier and had a nice chat the entire way down.
Sadly not many pics from this trip. So, time to cheat and post a few pics from previous tours to show how glorious this can be on better days. Will return on a clear day.
Helpful tip for future tourers.. there’s a substantial change in snow quality and not much grade after the switchback where you first see Lake Placid. On most tours that’s where you’ll start to be much more exposed to the wind.
