On Saturday, Tiff and I had our sights set on Swain. We were looking forward to their Spring Carnival – the first one of the season locally – and excited to get outside and make some turns. With temperatures in the 50’s & 60’s forecasted for the days ahead, we wanted to take advantage of what could be the last of cold weather skiing.

Knowing we had afternoon commitments and had to leave by 1 p.m., we made sure to arrive first thing to maximize our time on the slopes. The sun was shining, and conditions were fantastic, with a light dusting of snow on top of the groomers.

It was our fourth visit to Swain this year and was the busiest we had seen it, yet we never waited in a lift line. We always get a kick out of the village locals that have ATV / UTV parking slopeside, and the convenience of parking our own vehicle steps away from the chairlift.

We explored all around the mountain before the rail jam kicked off at 11 a.m. FullSend Ski and Outdoor was one of the event sponsors, offering ski and snowboard demos. Park riders gave it their all on the features set up outside the base lodge.

The pond skim was scheduled to follow but was pushed back later in the day so staff could better prep the pond. We soaked up the sunshine and lively atmosphere on the Shawmut Grille deck, wishing we could stay longer. But before we knew it, it was time to hit the road.

Later that day, I checked Swain’s social media for highlights of what we might have missed. The pond skim looked like a hit, with a crowd of enthusiastic spectators lining up to watch, as did the Downhill Dummy Race. We’re already looking forward to another visit this season for some fun spring laps!
