The storm that hit late Friday night into Saturday left a nice carpet of snow at Stratton. When we got to the mountain at 8am is was snowing and a balmy 12F with a gusty wind. The gondola was operating initially, but it was down by about 9:30. It was snowing and blowing enough to cover our tracks.
Black Bear
There were few people on the trails or lifts. We figured that the driving conditions plus the last weekend before Christmas really limited the crowd.
The snow was light and fluffy
The open upper mountain trails were excellent. There was powder to be found all across the trails. Stratton claimed 9" of snow, but there seemed to be more.
Skiing in a snowstorm is excellent
The snow slowed down around noon and the temperatures started to rise into the mid 20s. The gondola eventually opened later in the day. There were a few gladed areas that were open - including the always fun Shredwood Forest.
There were lots of bumps and the snow got progressively heavier, although it could have been the legs running out of gas.
Eventually on Saturday night it started to rain. When we woke up on Sunday it was 40F and raining. With the forecast calling for single digits, we decided to head home by late morning.
