@Scottski63 told me recently that he'd heard speculation: I didn't have actually have wife, that I was making it all up. I guess I can see why people might think this, as my wife no longer skis and my daughter rarely skis.

But Neve insisted she wanted to ski Plattekill on Friday, for my semi-official birthday ski. To my surprise she agreed to a 3:15 alarm and actually woke me up when I slept through it.

She told me she would sleep on the drive, but she couldn't sleep, concerned that I might drive by the starbucks she'd scoped out at the Plattekill Rest Area on the Thruway.

early am

When we got there we were first in the guest lot.

Neve: "Dad no one is here!"

Harv: "We're right on time."

We booted up in the bar and went out to wait by the triple. Patrol let us go first.

The Face

The Face

Neve's a bit of a steep snob. Earlier in the season she told me she had no interest in skiing Gore if there was no black terrain open.

Normally in a situation like this, I'd have given her the choice: Belleayre more open, but not as steep. Plattekill, my favorite place to be, and yea steep.

But this wasn't a normal day, so there really was no choice. Tradition dictates a birthday ski, at Plattekill, each season.

We skied The Face, The S and North Face. A few runs in Scott showed up, he was raring to go, announcing he had little interest in groomers, aka open terrain.

Ridge Run

Ridge Run

I've got a bit of a fixation on Ridge Run (and Twist), the old school all natural blue trails, that are lined with trees that have never seen a snowgun. I was imaging cruising on 12 inches of supportive new snow. That wasn't what we found up top, and down below the cover was there, but the snow was windblown.

Scott on Plunge

Plunge

The top half of Plunge was more certainly more skiable. The way Scott explained it, you'd only be in trouble if you lost your nerve. Keep skiing, keep em flat, and worry about stopping later.

Plunge

After two runs on Plunge, we headed to Blockbuster.

Blockbuster

The sun was coming out, and Block was in the sun. It was cold and the snow seemed unaffected by sun and less windblown then Plunge or Ridge.

We had plans to meet mom in the Adirondacks Friday night. We went into the bar to raise a glass of sparkling water and then head on down the road in the early afternoon.

My daughter has only ever skied Mt Peter, Tuxedo Ridge and Gore. I'm glad she had a chance to experience something different. As you know, I feel very strongly, there is no place like Plattekill.

Laz is blowing on Block now, so come and get it.

Glad your daughter has experienced Plattekill. Both of my children appreciate Plattekill. My son has been skiing there since he was 8. No choice. My daughter has had some choice days.
