I made a trip from Ann Arbor, Mi. to deal with some family stuff in Albany and thought I am going to take my skis and I am going to ski somewhere. I had around 3 weeks to figure out where. I thought about Plattekill right away, but wasn't sure how much would be open. Catamount was on my list as was West Mtn. As the day got closer and Plattekill was making snow and the daily lake effect and Clipper snow falls started adding up and when I saw Plattekill was 100% open it was a no brainer. last year was my first time skiing Plattekill and there were 3 ways down. I was told by more than one person that if you can get most of the runs open and some powder that Plattekill is the place to ski. Well I sure was happy when I arrived they had gotten a good 6" of new snow.
I booted up at my car and headed for the lift. I also have to say how nice it was to able to get my ticket before I even entered the parking lot. As I was riding up the lift I was very happy to see that the snow was basically untracked
After a few runs off the triple lift I went over to the double lift to ski some of the blue switch back runs and I can say I was not disappointed
I gave North Face a try and found the snow to be excellent and a very fun run. By now my 40o' vertical Michigan legs were starting to feel the longer runs, but I decided to try out Plunge. What I didn't know was they had blown snow and I saw the whales which was fine, but they also had not groomed at all and with the natural snow plus manmade it was very deep and a heavy snow. I felt I need a little speed to help get on top of the snow, but my legs wouldn't let me. So it was a very long time to get down, make a few turns and stop and let my legs rest.
After taking a break I went back out it started to snow and was coming down pretty good for a short time
I love when a ski area leaves up some of their past, like Gore with the old gondola towers and Plattekill also has some of that with the remains of an old T-Bar
I have to say this was one of my best times skiing. Laz took about 10-20 mins and talked to me, he couldn't remember my name, but when I said I was there last year for Harvey's birthday and was from Michigan he knew who I was. I love the fact that you are not just a number here.
I took a pic I as I was leaving, it makes me think of how I get excited when I pull into a ski area and you can see the trails from a distance.
Also just for Brownski when in the Albany area no trip would be complete with some Ted's Fish Fry
