Started the Upper Peninsula, Wi, Minn road trip in Iron Mtn at Pine mtn which was started by Fred Pabst in the thirties.I had to wait until 10 AM until the ski lifts started spinning. I chatted with the ski patroller for a while and then it was off to ride a center pole double the first one I have risen in quite some time. I made about a dozen runs on the Indy Pass and my goal was to get over to iron River at Ski Brule to check out all theUnique lift arrangements. Here’s a few pictures of Pine Mountain which is more famous for its ski jump than anything else.
I then made the trip over to Ski Brule where there has been much infatuation of the variety of lifts on Snowjournal and different brands of not only halls but Muellers a Doppylmayer t bar and other assorted rope tows.
Another unique thing they have at Brule is a mid mountain 1880s Homestead heated only by potbelly stove selling the usual assortment of beverages and food items of which two dollar and 50 Cent Miller light times two hit the spot at intermission. Apparently there was a farm there which is hard to believe on the side of that hill but the old log structure is being utilized very nicely. I anticipated staying till five to meet Olympic gold champion Nick Baumgartner but I did not want to travel to Ashland Wisconsin in the dark. I spent about two hours at Brule and that was fine. Now tomorrow I am off to Spirit Mountain in Duluth Minnesota and from there up to Lutsen.
Not only am I looking at forward to Lutsen with the only Midwest gondola but next week back in Michigan at big Powderhorn, Indianhead, and white cap Wisconsin, and most likelyPorcupine to finish up the excursion
