Back in 2019 I didn’t realize that I was going to start a birthday tradition for my daughter who’s birthday is on April 6th. If it wasn’t for Covid this would have been our 4th year in a row of skiing the first weekend in April. In the past years we have left at 4:30 in the morning to make the 4 hour drive to Harbor Springs,Michigan. This year I got is a reservation in Gaylord Mi. which is around 3 hrs away, we were on the road by 6:45pm on Friday and got our room around 10pm. After being able to sleep in until 6:30 it was well worth the money for the room. We arrived to nubs around 8:45 and was happy to see the coverage from the parking lot.
We were booted up and ready to go by 9:15 and there was firm but groomed snow everywhere. Nubs had an ice storm on Wednesday/Thursday flowed by a few inches of snow. The amount of ice on the trees was crazy but pics don’t do it justice how it looked in person when the sun came out.
Each run the sun was doing its magic and was mailing the snow a nice soft spring snow.
They may not be long runs but nubs is known for their glade runs. They have easier runs for new people to trees to more difficult tree runs.Unfortunately they were not in play this weekend.
Nubs is also know for some the best grooming in the Mid-West and they take it so seriously that they make sure that their snowmobiles don’t leave a track in the snow.
We may not have the biggest hills, but the view of Grand Traverse Bay going out to Lake Michigan never gets old. Pics do not do justice as to how nice the view is.
By around 1pm it was time to go to the parking lot which didn’t have very many cars in it and have a fantastic lunch with another group of people who ski at Caberfae and halfway through lunch it started to snow.
We made a handful of runs after lunch, but with it being 38 degrees and snowing the snow was sticking to our goggles and it was very hard to see. So after 35 runs Megan and myself called it a season. Nubs will close with a good 3 foot base on the 3rd. This was my 22nd season skiing with my daughter and I can wait for next season to start, and as always thanks for all the people at NYSKIBLOG for taking an interest in how we make a mountain out of a molehill.
