I came across this study by NSAA for the year 2016-17. I immediately started googling to find a newer version but couldn't find one that didn't require paying $100.

Some highlights:

• Skiers are getting older, although this data is a bit confusing
• More couples and families, fewer singles
• Skiers HH income is growing
• Small growth in percentage of minorities (non-white)
• Skiing growing in the east, shrinking in the west, mid-west
• Alpine growing, boarding declining, telemark dead
• Helmet usage consistent (75-85%) and growing across all ages

Would love to hear some analysis by those who know how to read between the lines. I especially find the age data confusing the "age brackets" don't seem to line up with the "generational" data.

I couldn't find 19/20 and it looks like 20/21 hasn't been released yet?

This was the most recent I could find:

Like when it comes to buying used skis, not that much point to try to read much into statistics that are more than a couple years old. Even without a pandemic that started in March 2020, not sure a view of 2016-17 makes much difference 5+ years later. Especially because the ski industry re-acted to the situation in ways that probably weren't predictable then. Alterra and Ikon didn't really get going until Feb 2018.

I have a vague memory of thinking when looking at NSAA stats that it was incomplete because of the methodology used for collecting the data. Can't remember which segment was noticeably missing.

I learned something from it. Somebody cough up the $200 for the newer one, or post a better one, and I'll delete this thread.
