Mt van Hoevenberg Conditions

On 10 and 11 February, I skied Mt van Hoevenberg in Lk Placid. More snow than I've seen in years, this is a banner year. And they've upped their grooming as well. Git some while you can.

Conditions at the Ho, 28 February. Everything open, though not as much snow on the ground as same time last year. Despite the new snow, there's some exposed boilerplate here and there, but you can ski around it. Overall, really good conditions.

Mount van Hoevenberg, 18 January. World Cup trails closed because Saint Lawrence Winter Carnival / Eastern Cup. Most of the 1980 trails are open. Photo is the near the top of the first hors categorie climb on Porter Mt.

As you can see, dirt is coming up here and in other places. However, considering how little snow we've had this year, skiing has been great. Been 2 years since I put in this many kilometers on the 1980 trails.

Today I encountered several associated with the race skiing backwards on some of the trails. Athletes, coaches, parents. Nearly got hit twice. On the flats it's no biggie if yer skiing both directions. On East Mountain and Porter Mountain, no bueno. Gotta respect the one way.

Only the World Cup trails are open at Mt van Ho. The recent thaw took out the 1980 trails, as well as every other nordic ski center nearby.

The World Cup trails still have a most excellent base. Teams are trickling in for the SuperTour finals, and there's a palpable stoke in the air. Photo is two Alaska Pacific University coaches preparing to test skis.

This week, I'm reporting on the SuperTour finals for www.nordicinsights.news. Yesterday was the men's and women's sprints. You're safer at a dang NASCAR race than by the top skiers hurtling down this hill millimeters from the V-boards.

Second foto: newly crowned men's sprint national champion, Ben Ogden, giving a young fan his autograph. Best photo I took all day. Brings a tear to my eye.
