Yesterday, I decided to go check out Montage. I wanted to use an Indy Pass day without getting up at the crack of dawn or driving too far and it looked like a cool place from the website…

I pulled into the parking lot around 10:15 Am or so. As has been commented on by others, the lodge and parking lot are mid mountain. I booted up at the car.

It was a nice day but I imagine this stairway would be treacherous if it was icy. My guess is that they’re probably aggressive about keeping it shoveled when it’s colder- just based on the number of employees that were around the bases area, greeting people and answering questions

The mid mountain lodge makes sense because the bottom half of the resort is where the steeper terrain is. This chair in the learning area cracked me up a little. I think the magic carpet on the other side of the trail has more vertical.

Seems like they’re keeping things affordable. I think I saw another sign advertising midweek tickets for $40…

Like all good Mid Atlantic Ski Resorts, there is a water slide. It wasn’t open though…

Not really knowing where I was going, I found my way down to the quad on the lower mountain, where their steeper terrain is located. A kid on the chair told me that White Lightning is the steepest trail on the east coast. I haven’t verified that. It is steep for sure but not for very long. The first pic up above is it. Anyway, I think Hackledam, the newly cut trail at Holiday Mountain in Monticello is just as steep. There is a warning before you get to it- everything but a skull and cross bones…

I skied everything down there a few times and then went to explore the rest of the place. I found some Seniors Racing…

Skiers’ right of the hill is where you can get close to full top to bottom runs in. It’s also where the beer garden is. There is some nice cruising to be found over here…

Not sure if there is much tree skiing culture at Montage but it looks like they would have some fun low angle stuff if they had more natural snow

It’s kind of weird skiing right above a small city. People who live in Scranton are lucky to have a decent medium sized hill right in thier backyard. The Office really missed the boat not doing a skiing episode…

I think I skied everything and rode every lift but the Magic Carpet but I eventually made my way back to the quad and just skied White Lightning and a few other steepish trails down there.

I noticed that all the lifts had little snow ramps built at their loading stations. You don’t see that much but it’s a good thing to do. It greatly cuts down on people catching their tips and gives beginners another second or two to get themselves situated on the chair. It’s a small thing but shows me that somebody is paying attention and thinking about the customer. I appreciate that.

A nice thing about the mid mountain parking is that you can get off the top of the quad and slide right over to this spot where you can just click out and walk to your car. Super convenient.

The snow was really good yesterday- soft, carvable packed powder. Montage is a quirky place in some ways but everybody was friendly. It wasn’t too crowded. It’s got the Brownski seal of approval.

Glad you had fun. I have quite a few a few ski days there. Night skiing there, my nephews and I played Roller Derby.
When the place was called Snow Mountain, they used to have 10 dollar Tuesdays. I brought a few Co workers out for some night turns.
I brought new just joined our union Apprentice down White Lightning, he tumbled half way down the trail. Lost his keys , we looked but couldn’t find them. He went back in the Spring, but never found them.

Great pics and trip report, as always. :)

The entire main base area becomes a water park during the warm months. Believe it or not, there is a Lazy River right in front of the base lodge. There is a wave pool near that spiral water slide. I've stopped by more than once on my way to/from Lake Placid during the summer. The place is usually quite busy.

This chair in the learning area cracked me up a little.
@Stu got the story behind why that chair still exists in his podcast with the current owner. He wasn't a skier when he bought the place. As an adult beginner, he appreciated having a really slow chair for learning how to load and unload a fixed-grip chairlift.

I actually found a car key halfway down White Lightning (skier’s left) during a beautiful corn-snow Spring ski day last March. No joke. The key looked like it had been there a while but it sounds like your colleague’s lost key experience was year’s ago so I can’t imagine it was the same key. Who knew White Lightning was a sink for keys! If anyone is looking for their car key that was lost on White Lightning, I gave it to the lift attendant at the bottom of the hill and he said he would bring it to lost and found.

Nice report! I enjoyed it for those same reasons including how it overlooks Scranton, what many might consider one of the most unexotic places in the U.S. As described in my mag article eight years ago, we made a fun weekend of it -- skiing Saturday at Montage, overnighting in Hilton hotel downtown, and spending Sunday at the train museum. We've still never gotten around to two other attractions that we'd promised to visit at some point in the future: the Houdini museum and the well-regarded Lackawanna coal mine tour.

A separate minor story that I love to tell: in 1999, while driving north to CNY for the Labor Day holiday, just outside Scranton was an electric sign along I-81 that said "Exit 182a for Jethro Tull parking." Being a longtime JT fan, I said "what the hell?" and headed to Montage for the concert. It was a great two-hour show and Ian Anderson told an interesting anecdote -- that the town of Wilkes-Barre was founded and naned 230 years ago in part by guitarist Martin Barre's family, who'd emigrated from England. Ian made note that no one knows why the pronunciation of Martin's last name ("bar") somehow morphed into "bear-uh." I've never been able to fact-check the story but why would he make it up and tell several thousand people while Martin nodded his head in agreement?

I skied there Sunday as well. Wish I would have known you were going to be there. We could have hooked up.
It is a quirky area but while the parking lot was full the most we waited for the lift was a few chairs and often was ski-on. I heard the Pocono areas were mobbed on Sunday.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday lift tickets are $40.00 and include rentals if you need them.
The Midlands were added during the pandemic and is a nice spot to grab lunch on a nice day as we did Sunday. It's right behind your parking lot photo and it's easy to grab your brown bag lunch and beer from the car.
I drove by Montage for years on the way to Elk and Greek Peak. You can see it from the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike. I finally skied there on one of the discount cards about 15 years ago and really enjoyed the lack of crowds and the steeper trails at the bottom of the mountain.
People from the Philadelphia metro, New York metro, and north Jersey have to drive past the Pocono areas to get there so that limits the crowds but I always tell people it's worth the extra half hour or so to avoid the crowds on a weekend.
The current management is doing a good job. Glad it got your seal of approval.

Wish I would have known you were going to be there.
That's kind of what the "where are you skiing this week" thread is about. I intended I as a meetup thread.

I am not of fan of skiing alone.
