Yesterday, I decided to go check out Montage. I wanted to use an Indy Pass day without getting up at the crack of dawn or driving too far and it looked like a cool place from the website…

I pulled into the parking lot around 10:15 Am or so. As has been commented on by others, the lodge and parking lot are mid mountain. I booted up at the car.

It was a nice day but I imagine this stairway would be treacherous if it was icy. My guess is that they’re probably aggressive about keeping it shoveled when it’s colder- just based on the number of employees that were around the bases area, greeting people and answering questions

The mid mountain lodge makes sense because the bottom half of the resort is where the steeper terrain is. This chair in the learning area cracked me up a little. I think the magic carpet on the other side of the trail has more vertical.

Seems like they’re keeping things affordable. I think I saw another sign advertising midweek tickets for $40…

Like all good Mid Atlantic Ski Resorts, there is a water slide. It wasn’t open though…

Not really knowing where I was going, I found my way down to the quad on the lower mountain, where their steeper terrain is located. A kid on the chair told me that White Lightning is the steepest trail on the east coast. I haven’t verified that. It is steep for sure but not for very long. The first pic up above is it. Anyway, I think Hackledam, the newly cut trail at Holiday Mountain in Monticello is just as steep. There is a warning before you get to it- everything but a skull and cross bones…

I skied everything down there a few times and then went to explore the rest of the place. I found some Seniors Racing…

Skiers’ right of the hill is where you can get close to full top to bottom runs in. It’s also where the beer garden is. There is some nice cruising to be found over here…

Not sure if there is much tree skiing culture at Montage but it looks like they would have some fun low angle stuff if they had more natural snow

It’s kind of weird skiing right above a small city. People who live in Scranton are lucky to have a decent medium sized hill right in thier backyard. The Office really missed the boat not doing a skiing episode…

I think I skied everything and rode every lift but the Magic Carpet but I eventually made my way back to the quad and just skied White Lightning and a few other steepish trails down there.

I noticed that all the lifts had little snow ramps built at their loading stations. You don’t see that much but it’s a good thing to do. It greatly cuts down on people catching their tips and gives beginners another second or two to get themselves situated on the chair. It’s a small thing but shows me that somebody is paying attention and thinking about the customer. I appreciate that.

A nice thing about the mid mountain parking is that you can get off the top of the quad and slide right over to this spot where you can just click out and walk to your car. Super convenient.

The snow was really good yesterday- soft, carvable packed powder. Montage is a quirky place in some ways but everybody was friendly. It wasn’t too crowded. It’s got the Brownski seal of approval.

Fun mountain! I would like to be there when they do Mountain Fest... looks like a good time.

The Office definitely should have done an episode there!
