You don't have to if you don't want to.
You can also dislike and do a couple other things.
One thing missing is a WTF confused thing.

I’ll watch the likes. I see we have a “reaction score” metric. See how useful it is before I contribute more. This would have been REAL interesting back in the politicrap days........just sayin’.

So the reaction score can be whatever you want. The default was +1 for like -1 for dislike, and maybe +2 for love (can't remember).
What I found with the dislike is that people don't really use it to say "I dislike your opinion" but more like "I agree, the thing you are whining/complaining about sucks." So I removed negative points from dislike.
