Day 2 of @Scottski63's Birthday Party rolled on.
After a most excellent Day 1 at Plattekill, we went into Phoenicia for dinner and consumed beer and updated weather info. Tomorrow was a Monday and we were considering Hunter and Gore.
Gore was forecast for 2-4 with no chance of mixing, while the Cats looked to be getting rain before the fun started. The Hunter forecast was for 4-10 if you can believe it. Basically NWS saying they weren't sure when exactly it was going to turn over to snow.
Scott seemed to want stay at his home mountain, and it certainly occurred to me that it staying in the Cats would save me 250 miles in 24 hours. We crashed pretty early and both woke up at around 4am, to check out the rain. I decided to roll the dice, go back to sleep, and ski with Scott.
When we woke up in the morning we had about an inch of soaking wet snow. Nothing was falling out of the sky. We had coffee and bacon and then packed up and left. It was 33F when we got in the car.
I followed Scott all day
As we drove west and then north, the temps dropped and started to snow, pretty hard.
At Hunter it was snowier, there was maybe 2 inches down. We parked pretty close to the front and booted at the car. There was no line at the ticket window and I got the "buddy rate" of $64. Surprised me, I figured I'd be out 80 or 90 something. The empire strikes back.
There wasn't much of a line and the Catskill Flyer started loading soon after we got there. The first three or four runs we found tracks everywhere. Considering how close it was to freezing the snow was very skiable, both untracked and cutup.
It was snowing very hard which made it tough to keep the camera dry while taking pictures.
One surprise was Belt Parkway. We used it several times to return to base from various adventures. Skiers left was almost fully cutup, but great to ski all day. I think the intermediates were skiing the center of the trail and pushing all the new snow to the sides.
After lunch we continued to find great skiing. Some of the best of the day.
It was a killer couple of days. And yea, I'm calling it POW.
Thanks for skiing Scott! Happy Birthday man.
