I have had the trip to Holiday Valley for my daughter and myself planned since Christmas. A week ago it looked like it was going to rain both days and we would be stuck skiing in the rain. Lift tickets and Condo rental was paid for. As the day got closer and it looked like only Wednesday evening would get some rain and snow for Thursday.
We arrived on Wednesday around 10:30 and were booted up and skiing by 11
It was cloudy and around 40 degrees out. The snow was almost spring like and even what looked like ice you could get an edge in. They had all the lifts but the Spruce lift running and the few runs off that lift open. There was no lift lines all day and with 4 of the 8 lifts being HSQ’s we could get a lot of runs in which was the plan with rain forecasted to start by 6.
We managed to get 29 runs in on everything from the Tannenbaum pine tree end of the hill to the short but pretty steep run The Wall. Our legs told us we were done for the day at 4:30 if we wanted to have anything to ski on Thursday.
The rain ended up starting around 10 and was supposed to change over to snow over night. We woke up to around 2” of snow and a light to steady snow falling and no wind and temps of 26 degrees. We got to Holiday Valley around 9:30 and were skiing by 10. The spring like snow had set up very firm overnight and the new snow would be pushed off very easy.
As the day went on and the snow continued to fall the sides of the runs were starting to get the nice soft snow on them.
We managed to ski 30 runs on Thursday and they got about 8” of snow throughout the day. While Holiday Valley is only 750’ of vertical I feel it skis much bigger, with the layout and connecting trails together you can ski runs that end up being close to a mile long. The runs close to a mile long in lower Michigan are flat runs to connect one pod of trails to another, so our legs were feeling it.
I also have to say I was very happy with how my Shaggy Brockway 90 skis performed. I just got them and being hand made in Michigan or felt good to support a small Michigan company
It was another great Dad Daughter trip skiing. For 22 years she has been my ski partner and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
The only part of the trip that was off was the foot of snow that fell on Thursday night and unfortunately we had to head home. Also next year we are going to ski Holimount since they are open to the public during the week.
