Sunday 06 Feb 2022 - Decided to check out Hickory today as Petersburg Pass was likely all ice due to the rain/sleet event on Thursday. Got a late start because of the double fatal MVA on the Northway. Ended up at the hill around 1:30. Total of maybe six cars in the lot. Signed in and paid the $10. All the waivers were gone and the sign in sheet was completely full. Skinned up Snow Shoe to Ridge Runner. Skin track was in good shape, no post holes and not icy. Approach was protected from the wind. Fantastic views of Gore from the top of the lift line just before the true summit. Decided (against better judgment) to take Hare-Top Notch-Honey Run. Unfortunately, I hit either a rock or a jagged piece of metal somewhere near the top. The result was a horrible core shot on a brand new pair of Dynafits which ended my day after just one run.
Snow - several inches of powder to packed powder on top of a consolidated base in most places. Seemed really good on the way up. Sunk through a buried crust layer in other places which was not ideal. Main trails were tracked out. Hare was pretty thawcky near the top. Skied a lot like Helmers at McCauley. Recommend looking for fresh snow in the woods.
