You read that right. Haverstraw Beach! I got out for some rare (for me at least) Rockland County bike path Nordic skiing. It was supposed to be Nyack Beach but I discovered they don’t plow their parking during winter so I couldn’t get at that end of the bike path. I also considered getting on the path by the Hook mountain/ Rockland Lake parking by the firehouse but I wasn’t sure how far down the road I would have to walk to get to snow. So I made my way to the northern end of the bike path in Haverstraw. I didn’t realize it was called Haverstraw Beach until I saw it on my phone’s map. There’s no beach there.
Totally real un-staged gear pic
I actually forgot how to click in at first but then I figured it out. Other than just getting exercise, I was there for the views.
It’s the Hudson Valley so of course you stumble into a history lesson.
There was enough snow to glide on but it wasn’t very very deep so my poles made a click click sound every time I set them. I think my Nordic style is called kick and glide. I certainly wasn’t skating.
At first you could hear the traffic on 9W but then it was drowned out by this train
Anyway, I got a pretty good rhythm going and my heart rate was elevated so mission accomplished I guess. Usually when go cross country skiing I flail all over the place and fall a lot, which wasn’t the case this time, so that’s good. I’m sure my form was terrible though. I did not feel like I was skiing efficiently by any means.
There are always some ruins to look at along this corridor. I’m not sure if these are related to the ice business like the old buildings further south near Hook Mountain and Rockland Lake.
What do you think? Is this sendable?
Anyway, this area is all about the exercise and the nice views of the river
On the skis I was on yesterday, this hill was terrifying
I did about 4 miles- only saw one other person.
