Gore Mountain, NY: 1/7/26 - I Wished for POW

NWS was calling for freezing rain overnight, but I didn't see it in the radar. There was no fz rain at our house.

Our water was out, bad timing on a powder day. The pressure switch just kept turning the pump off. We even replaced it last night. We could not figure it out. Sadly, I gave up my dreams for POW. 😢

But wait! My curious and insightful wife heard something, and asked me to check to see if the outdoor faucets were turned off. I actually bet her $1000 that they were all off. I poked my head out the side door, and there was the geyser. I ran out in bare feet to cut it off, and then came in to admit my mistake.

Then I got into the truck and drove to Gore. Ski Bowl actually. 90 minutes "late!"

I parked right next to Joe Minder Lodge, 100 feet from the lift. Booted up, with 2 other skiers.

Moxham was groomed, it had only an inch on top. After a lap on Moxham, I headed to Burnt Ridge.

On the BRQ I rode with Patrol, a super friendly guy who's a Saratoga fire fighter.

He told me they just opened Barkeater and had plans to open more.

barkeater

I'm like an hour late and I got third tracks on Barkeater. It was dreamy. I skied it twice.

I took this pic of Mineshaft because Neve was complaining it wasn't open on Monday. I wanted to gloat on Snapchat.

Nice (y)
Did ya pay yer wife the grand she won yet?

Best day of the year yesterday. There was maybe 5 inches of untracked over groom when we did Twister. Showcase looked good from the lift but we skipped it because it looked like it had been groomed later after the snow started. Hulabaloo was excellent early. Later everything was mostly nicely tracked out crud, with some dust on crust spots and a little fog/flat light at the top. Everything was good but High Peaks side was the place to be.

I skied with @Armon today. He (understandably) got the wrong idea from this:

I poked my head out the side door, and there was the geyser. I ran out in bare feet to cut it off, and then came in to admit my mistake.

Our house is still being finished, and one of the guys on the siding crew opened the faucet for a drink when it was zero degrees out. The faucet was frozen and I guess he left it open. When it got up to about 28F it started to run on it's own.

Ya nailed it in yer second sentence in this:.

Have you ever watched 'Maine Cabin Masters' on Magnolia Network? Seeing your place I am sure you would enjoy some of their 'saves'. Impressive seeing them bring a former hunting camp, for example, back to live. Some had been abandoned for years, even decade or so. My family rented places in the 60's in the same area where they do their 'saves', Fayette Me, Livermore Falls, Lovejoy Pond.
