Fahnestock, NY: 2/12/25 Cairn Mountain Bushski

I got all pumped up on Brownski’s Hudson Highlands XCD TR and then saw the forecast. Not good. I knew I had to act fast before it was all gone.

I headed up through Wiccopee to my local stomping grounds in Fahnestock State Park.

No parking area or kiosk here.

No trail markers either, just an old woods road.

Up through an old hemlock grove.

Passed Skesus.

And an old homestead.

Some deer got first tracks.

And I got mine.

I had skins with me but made do with the fishscales.

The upland forest gave way to gladed heaths.

I was recently bushwacking this area with my friend Red Beard and we had spotted an opening that looked inviting. I was now on a mission to find it.

Time for a bushski.

No name on the map so I’m declaring it Cairn Mountain.

I descended the north face direct.

Steep and deep, with unskied lines everywhere. It’s a lot like Valdez back in the nineties without those pesky helicopters.

Everything is extreme when you’re on cross country skis.

Back into the forest.

Back on track for a 3.25 mile slide out with a mellow 850 drop.

Roundtrip from home 15 miles. There’s something about human powered days that’s good for the soul. Glad I squeaked this one in.

I just got a pair of the cheapo army surplus ascensions skins off of ebay for the epochs & annums, haven't had a chance to use them yet but will report back once I do!

I had skins with me but made do with the fishscales.
