Every year for my staycation I have kind of a theme. One year, I bought a hammock to hang in my woods, read and nap. Another year, I joined a yoga studio. Those are still happening. This summer, I purchased an Empire Pass. As in, this morning. Buttermilk Falls, Treman, and Taughannock are so close to me, yet it has been years since I have been to them. (Ok, so there's a little, private gorge a fifteen minute walk from my house, but still. And, I haven't been there since last summer.) I ran out of time today and didn't do the loop from the bottom of Treman, to the top and back down. Here are photos of Lower Treman and Lucifer Falls.

And, this is what's 15 minutes away.

I get one too, usually just to pick blueberries off the highbush at the old golf course that’s reverted back to the wild at Minnewaska. Afterwards we head over to Peterskill, hike down the abandoned trails of Ski Minnie and follow the stream way down to swim in the deep pools with the nudies.

The falls. In the past, I have walked the flat trail to the base. It was closed today, so I walked the north rim trail to the top, in flip flops, since I hadn't anticipated doing anything but walking on the flat. It worked. Those stone steps are impressive, especially when you think that they probably had to be dug out and put in manually, so many years ago.

Upper Buttermilk today. I am glad that I knew there was a parking lot closer to the Lake Treman trail than the lot by the pay station. That was full and people were cranky. I was the second car at the second lot. I think I saw about 10 people on the trail, and everyone was happy. I also managed to get lost. ? Beginner's mind.

I have an Empire pass - we use it mostly for Caumsett, Robert Moses and Jones Beach down here on Long Island, but I love visiting those parks in Ithaca. Treman is my favorite. I have two enlarged photos in my office of the gorge trail at Treman. I'm hoping to get out to Letchworth one of these days - its just such a long drive from where I live.

Quick stop at Fillmore Glen. This is the Cowsheds. Super cool! On the lower left, you can see a stone wall that is about two and a half feet high, for some perspective. The rocks are massive.
