While boarding my plane at Newark Thursday evening, I was reminded that I haven't been back to Berlin, my favorite European city, in decades and need to rectify that in the near future.

After landing in Geneva early the next morning, I headed off to the 3 Vallées, where I spent two days last March surveying three of the four sectors there -- Meribel, Les Menuires, and Val Thorens -- but I didn't have enough time to ski at Courchevel. The Powderhounds website has a helpful overview that describes Courchevel as both a billionaire’s winter playground and having a sizable amount of world-class terrain, both off- and on-piste.

I arrived at 11 am and met a couple friends from Los Angeles, Liz and Tony, and enjoyed the sunny day until it clouded up around 2 pm:

Plenty of elbow room!

It hasn't snowed much over the last week, so we stayed mostly to the groomed trails and by early afternoon, conditions on the lower mountain felt almost spring-like.

A bit odd to see an old-school Poma still in operation at a modern mega resort:

I finished at 3 pm and got on the road to a different French mega resort that has been on my hit-list for years, where I'll be spending four days.

I love how the trail maps are so off scale...
