Considering Alternatives for a New House

Why don’t you buy a gas pickup for yourself and an EV for your wife?
That's probably what will happen.

I want to do something to move towards alternative. I don't think our roofline orientation is ideal for solar, the sides of triangle face east and west and there are (currently) some trees around. Been told Geo-thermal is a no-go in the Adk too.

Ideas?

Why? Do you use your AC at all up there? If you have a spring or a sizable pond it should work. Drilling wells is expensive .

Take down some trees on another part of your property, build an open air (or 3 sided) hangout hut/lean-to thing with a south facing roof. Put the panels on that, run wires back to your camp.

We'd be in the blue:

No AC yet, house has not been built. Floor plan is designed but haven't addressed HVAC.

Actually looking at it more closely it looks like roof would face SW and NE. Does SW work?

Maybe:

You could power your new car and electric Ranger

Put in an outside wood boiler
My neighbor put in a outdoor coal boiler and tried to burn wood in it. We’re not friends anymore. Once the DEP came down on him and he used it the way it was intended it wasn’t too bad .
Outdoor boilers require a lot of attention.

Starting from scratch I would do water to water Geo , radiant floor heat with a tankless combi propane unit for domestic and hydronic backup.
The combi unit can be run off of a generator if power is out.

1. Have you house designed for passive solar.
2. Solar water heating - for hot water and heat.
3. Solar panels for electric.
Try to have your house face as close to south as possible.

What happens when you do that?

Really? By a lot of attention do you mean throwing chunks in twice a day? I don't have one but a couple of my buddy's do and swear by them. Obviously the key is to have access to your own source of firewood.
