Caberfae Peaks hasn’t had their Sprong Carnival for the past two seasons due to Covid. Saturday the 19th is the day of the Carnival and Sunday the 20 is their last day. So my buddy Jim who had his truck and truck camper totaled on his way to Caberfae on Jan 14th finally found a truck and camper and we decided to spend the weekend at Caberfae. It nice that they allow people to camp in their lot.
We left on Friday after work and drove through close to three hours of rain, it had rained a good part of the night also. I was encouraged when I got up to go to the bathroom at 5am and I saw the groomer out and it wasn’t raining. We finally got up around 8:30ish and looked at the radar and there was on last rain cell left that looked like it would be gone by 10:30-11. So we didn’t rush to get ready, we enjoyed some eggs and bacon and took our time getting ready.
The rain had all but stoped right on cue around 10:30 and what was left behind was a surprisingly nice soft snow. They were setting up the snow bar and getting ready for Carnival. It was nice to see more people thanI though would be there.
It was a very grey day and a low clouds at times. I did finally ski with Bob AKA Ciscokid after a 2 year hiatus. It was nice to see Bob again and make Some turns and enjoy a Bloody Mary
a little Fireball on the lift never hurts either
It ended up being a good day of skiing and they had a band in their 36 room hotel bar which is where we closed the night out at
What a difference a day makes. Woke up to sunshine and around 28 degrees out with a forecasts high of 50.
The snow was very firm, but with each run the sun was starting to do its magic. There was not a cloud in the sky and no wind either.
Around 1:00 we tailgated for lunch and venison bratwurst were on the menu.
This is also the last season for Caberfae’s Shelter double. It’s said to see a classic Hall lift go, but the new triple lift will service what is going to become the East Peak over the next 10 years of so.
In the end it was 50 and sunshine and a nice cream cheese type snow. It was a great way to close out my Caberfae Peaks part of my season.
