It’s not often that it’s skiable all of the way down to the river in the Hudson Highlands. When conditions allow I try to make it happen. One of my favorite places for cross-country downhill is the old Cornish Estate trails up the backside of Bull Hill in Cold Spring.
After a day of wrestling with my snowblower I decided to ride down and check it out.
There was a little more snow and the river was frozen the last time I skied there.

11 inches at my house just inland was not much down here a day later but it doesn’t take much to cover the old drive.
There’s lots of scenery along the way especially with all of the leaves off the trees.
Passed the ruins of the old estate, the trail crosses over the Aqueduct and then ascends up to a notch with Breakneck. The old road is now badly eroded. This year I had to hike this section.
Sometimes it’s passable.

Up passed the ruins of the old dairy barns the trail starts to climb up the Notch Trail towards the summit. There are some great low angle glades in this area which are fun on a lightweight setup.
In 2022 I was able to make it to the summit.
Breakneck Ridge and Mt. Beacon.
Breakneck Ridge, the Hudson and Newburgh Beacon Bridge, Mt. Zion, Shawangunk Ridge and the Catskills in the distance.
The river 1,400ft below.
Looking south over West Point with the city skyline just barely visible on the horizon.
It’s a nice glide a little over 4 miles back down.
Today I couldn’t make the summit. I played around in the low angle instead.
The snow was soft and there was just enough.
Enough to cover an old stone wall.
Enough to make a few turns before heading back home.

It’s easy to want more but sometimes just enough is good enough for me.
