We spent Monday and Tuesday at Berkshire East and we were pleasantly surprised. We met my sister who lives north of Boston there. It was a 2.5 hour drive for each of us. We stayed in Charlemont above Wells Provisions which had everything we needed. Great food, coffee and beer. The town is charmingly gritty and free from overdevelopment.

The mountain had great skiing. We were prepared for something much smaller. The vertical is listed as 1,180 ft. The front facing trails run straight down the fall line with a steady pitch the whole way. The place was almost completely deserted. It’s like a totally different sport when you go midweek.

We took some laps with Peanut on the wraparound trails, Thunder and Outback to Roundabout. Since she only knows French fries I kept her on a tether. We passed an occasional uphiller and other than that we enjoyed having the trails all to ourselves.

The forecast called for a little snow on Monday night and I was all set with an uphill pass ready to strike. It never changed over from rain so I abandoned that idea and settled for early chair hot laps. It stayed warm so the skiing was soft.

Big Chief was my personal favorite but all of the trails were fun. There’s nothing like exploring a new place. Exhibition is a wide open green that was our crew’s favorite. You could rip some big turns on that puppy.

At the bottom of Exhibition is the cutest lift ever, the Top Notch Double.

It is a 1964 Hall that was originally at Magic where it was appropriately called the “Little Chair”. It was moved to Mt. Tom for awhile before it found its’ new home in 2001. It’s only 800 ft long with two towers and the chairs are wood. Old school cool.

After almost 10 miles of skiing with dad on the upper slopes Peanut took on the Magic carpet by herself.

She ripped it. French fries all the way.

Midweek skiing on soft snow is a winning combination. We’ll be back to Berkshire East for sure. We are fortunate to have the Indy Pass showing us the way.

Nice TR Rip! The Schaefer family really knows how to run a thriving independent ski area. Between the investments in snowmaking, expansion into MTB, and renewable energy development they are setting a great example of how small business can still be sustainable and viable in skiing.

I will say, the speed of their fixed grip triple would have some of the fixed grip evangelists on this forum thinking otherwise.

Jim and Jon’s dad, Roy, ran it when it went bankrupt in 1975 and bought it for a dollar. Now look how far they’ve come! They’ve got solar and wind and produce all of their power onsite. I don’t know much about mountain biking but the trails they built look crazy. They’ve got zip lines, a high ropes course, a mountain coaster and class 3 whitewater on the Deerfield. Pretty cool stuff. I’m looking forward to seeing the improvements at Catamount. A Berkshire Summit pass with an Indy add on is quite possible for us next year.

The triple ran one day. I read they got that from Magic too. The next day they ran the quad with the carpet loader. It was faster but I wouldn’t call it high speed. Maybe it wasn’t juiced up all the way.

Nice report and great to see it so well-run. During many death marches in the early/mid 00s from Brooklyn to northern VT/NH and the Eastern Townships, I kept wanting to break up the drive with a few hours at the B'east; however, Magic and especially Ascutney got the nod because it was just off I-91, always empty (even on Saturdays mid-season), and you could quickly rack up vert with the now-departed HSQ.

Great trip report! I loved B'East when my husband and I lived in MA; it was one of my favorites. I really dig these old school places, and I still feel like if I had to go back to MA, I'd want to live somewhere in this vicinity of Charlemont or Shelburne Falls.

@Ripitz The mountain biking trails are awesome! It seems a lot of my MA mtn biker friends now go to Thunder Mountain rather than Highland in NH. I haven't been in a few years, but Thunder did a much better job of maintaining their trails than Highland was at the time, especially the more beginner-friendly trails.

Thanks for the timely TR. Will be skiing a day or two at BEast some time next week as part of an Indy ski safari while based in the Berkshires. Been there once in early season but will be the first time for my friends coming from Boston and PA.
