In the 48 hours before heading up the Thruway Saturday morning, the NOAA forecast for Highmount was all over the place. At first, they were calling for rain, then 3-7 inches of snow, the 8-12 inches. Ultimately, that 8-12 fell, but not at Belleayre (a ski instructor who lives north of the ski area said they got 10 inches at his house).

While driving up the access road, we saw that the ski area only got a dusting, but even worse, the trees were coated in ice from freezing rain. And it was clear that with the clear skies, temps weren’t going to get out of the mid 20s. Good thing I sharpened my edges, I figured.

Turns out that we got some of the best spring skiing ever. From the first run at 9:15 to our last turns at 3 pm, everything was edgeable, soft corn and sugar… as Jason called it “GS Paradise.” And because it stayed cold, it didn’t turn to slush or heavy mounds. Nothing else to say really, just another beautiful day in the Catskills.
