Yesterday, I reported on the Climb to the Castle roller ski race for Nordic Insights. Outta my house at 6:40. Mist covering Lake Flower. Crawled through Lake Placid village in crippling fog. 29 degrees. It was 15 degrees warmer at the dang toll gate than alongside the west bank of the...

    Mount Pisgah Conditions

A bluebird, spring day at my local alpine bump. From earlier today (18 March). Met up with @Capt_Planit to earn turns at Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake. Not sure if my descending skills improved, but I had fun. And of course, good to meet another NYSB person. Come git some while you can.

Adk Nordic: The Season is Upon Us

Day One: The VIC Tuesday morning. Snow on the ground, and a morning physical therapy appointment. I worked like a dog to clear the driveway berm from last night’s snow storm. The great thing about early AM appointments is that they leave the rest of the day free for, you guessed it, skiing...

    Today's Ski Jumping

Scenes from the Star Spangled Ski Jump competition in Lake Placid, 5 July 2024. An appreciative crowd for these mostly junior ski jumpers. First, we saw little kids jumping on the 20 meter hill. Then 15 athletes came out on the H100, also known as K90.

    Paul Smiths VIC, NY: 2/18/24

Scenes from Paul Smiths VIC yesterday, 18 February. Over the previous couple days, the Tri-Lakes received around 8 inches of snow. Great grooming and fresh snow falling as I cruised around yesterday. A scene from the Loggers Loop: Peru Nordic teammate Ed: Uphill on Jenkins Mountain...

    Paul Smiths VIC, NY: 12/12/2023

Monday's storm got the VIC open. 6 - 7 inches of snow rolled to about a 2 inch base. Conditions ranged from packed powder to unconsolidated powder, with some dirt, ice, and wet spots mixed in. Decent early season conditions.

    Mt van Hoevenberg, NY: 12/4/2023

The Ho, yesterday. Con: a 500-meter hamster wheel in the stadium. Pro: a warm lodge to boot up. Bulletproof base, I could have brought good skis. One unconsolidated section in the apex of a downhill corner to keep you honest. Snowing a good bit of the day.

    Scott's Cobble, NY: 11/15/23

First day on snow; I haven't been out this early in years. I went to Scott's Cobble: trails on a golf course owned by the town of North Elba. Free skiing for Tri-Lakes residents. They got ~ 1.5 - 2", good enough for rock skis. As it was above freezing in Saranac Lake yesterday afternoon, I...
