Fahnestock, NY: 2/12/25 Cairn Mountain Bushski

I got all pumped up on Brownski’s Hudson Highlands XCD TR and then saw the forecast. Not good. I knew I had to act fast before it was all gone. I headed up through Wiccopee to my local stomping grounds in Fahnestock State Park. No parking area or kiosk here. No trail markers either...

    Wild Ice

Who’s on it? Not enough snow to ski the old pasture but it’s been cold enough to freeze the swamp for skating. The swamp is shallow so you don’t have that nightmare fuel of falling through that comes with deep or fast moving water. I use a rotary street sweeper / squeegee to clear the...

Sherrill, North Dome: Catskill High Peaks 30,31/37 12/17/24

After warming up on Halcott the day before, Powerman and I turned our attention towards two peaks that aren’t so easy to get to, Sherrill and North Dome from Shaft Road. With only traces of snow, we spiked up an old road at first that follows a stream. Immediately my heels were screaming...

Deep Notch, Halcott: Catskill High Peaks 29/37 12/16/24

With the recent thaw and warm temps, I decided it was best to ditch the skis, grab the snowshoes and head up into Deep Notch with Powerman to knock off a few more elusive Catskill High Peaks. After spending the night in Hunter we got a not so early start for the bushwack to Halcott aka...

Fahnestock Gravel: 10/12/24 Ancient Paths to Modern Roads

Part One Set out on a pleasant afternoon for a gravel tour from my house through Wiccopee to Fahnestock State Park. This area is rich in history. Human habitation has occurred here for at least 10,000 years, possibly even longer. I started off on country roads passing the old Methodist...

The Diamond Notch Express; Catskill High Peaks 27,28,29/37 5/23/24

Powerman and I have been working our way through the Catskill High Peaks together and it’s been quite a journey. Recently we had a window of opportunity but unfortunately he became sick at the last minute, so I set off on my own. I took off from Hopewell Junction at 7:30pm on the Dutchess...

Breakneck Point Trail Run - Hudson Highlands, NY: 5/5/24

Most people wear fancy dress to church on Sundays, but some wear running shoes. Today, I went to cheer on the faithful runners of the Breakneck Point Trail Runs. Riding on the wings of an angel, Freebird takes flight. Powerman in hot pursuit. Seven miles in, the congregation enters the...

Mt. Pisgah, NY: 3/3/24 Go Telemark Day

On a recent trip to visit friends in the North Country we discovered Mt. Pisgah Ski Center. Tucked on the backside of Mt. Pisgah just a few minutes from downtown Saranac Lake, this little gem packs a punch. https://www.facebook.com/MtPisgahAdk 329 vertical feet with a few rollers is...

Fahnestock, NY: 2/18/24 XC High on the Old School Road

12 inches of fresh followed by 2 more a few days later put the beautiful Fahnestock Plateau into play. The Winter Park with its’ hit-or-miss seasons reported a majority of their groomed trails open along with concessions and rentals. Conditions like this don’t happen that often and are usually...

Bull Hill - Hudson Highlands, NY: 1/30/22, 2/14/24

It’s not often that it’s skiable all of the way down to the river in the Hudson Highlands. When conditions allow I try to make it happen. One of my favorite places for cross-country downhill is the old Cornish Estate trails up the backside of Bull Hill in Cold Spring. After a day of...

    DIY Skis and Boards

Has anyone made their own skis or board? Just took down our Christmas tree and was wondering what to do with it. Freebird turned me onto this guy who made a snowboard out of them. Brings a new meaning to ripping the trees.

Belleayre, NY: Jan 7-8 2023 E-Bike Ski Trip

I have been meaning to pull off this trip for quite some time. I have a Bulls electric gravel touring bike that I use daily instead of a car. I usually commute 20 miles a day but sometimes it is 40. I ride year round so I am used to being out in the elements. I have been wanting to ride the...

    Ski Venture Club

Just hearing about this private club in Glenville for the first time. Two rope tows and 110’ vert. Established in 1937. Pretty sweet. Has anyone here skied it? https://www.nelsap.org/ny/venture.html

To Seal or Not to Seal

So, I have Sno Sealed lots of things before and have used Nik wax too. I have a few boots and gloves that I have not treated yet. I am wondering what people swear by and what specifically are the methods and reasons. Is there an argument for staying nude?
