Holiday Mountain, NY: 2/26/25 From the Ground Up

Waking up to travel for first chair can be rough. But not on weekdays at Holiday. Another first I'm splitting time between NJ and the Adk, back in the flatlands for a week, I looked for a weather window to ski Holiday. I've been to Holiday in the summer to check out the (huge) infrastructure...

Plattekill Mountain, NY: 2/22/25 Snow Pope Saturday

I was planning on skiing Plattekill on Sunday. Friday night around 11pm Zelda and I were reading in bed and she says "how about you ski tomorrow, so we can go out for dinner on Sunday?" I was all in for that. There'd been some largely unforecast snow Thursday night at Plattekill, and Saturday...

Titus Ski Center, NY: 2/16/25 Escape to the North

For some reason, Saturday night, I set my alarm for 5am instead of 6, to ski Gore. Sort of an odd thing to do. But when the alarm went, the first thing I did, was check the radar, and I saw this... I didn't see how Gore was going to escape the dreaded Pink Line. In addition NWS had removed...

Gore Mountain, NY: 2/13/25 The Miracle

I started out by skipping first chair, I skied in our woods. If it was going to fz rn I wanted to get my trails tracked first. But I was done by 8:50. It was 24 degrees —cold enough for a miracle — and it was snowing and sleeting. Over to Gore I went. I missed first chair, but I still had...

Plattekill, NY: Jan 19, 2025 Persistance Pays

Sunday was one of those days where persistence paid off. I started by inviting myself to Scotts' place for Saturday night. Sunday morning we got up around 6, and drove west towards first chair at Plattekill. Ski Plattekill The thing is, the forecast had a chance for snow starting late, in...

    Plattekill NY: 1/10/25 Worlds Collide

@Scottski63 told me recently that he'd heard speculation: I didn't have actually have wife, that I was making it all up. I guess I can see why people might think this, as my wife no longer skis and my daughter rarely skis. But Neve insisted she wanted to ski Plattekill on Friday, for my...

    Retired People: What Surprised You?

If you are retired, what have you learned that could help us who are not (or almost!) there yet? What is the most surprising thing, or what was unexpected?

It's Time to Ski New York

For several years my goal has been to ski every ski area in NY. After Jan 1, this will be a more realistic goal. By my count right now there are 25 lift served areas to be skied (in green). Master Map Updated (3/14/25) - 18 skied to date I don't like the idea of skiing multiple areas in one...

    Plattekill: Ridge and Twist 12/7/24

From what I can tell, today was a good day just about everywhere. I mostly follow NY and VT. Many of the images I saw today had captions about the surprising snow depth. Cats are fat. There were places I could have skied today with lift service. But as soon as I knew I could ski today, and...

POMOCA Skins, never used, cheap. (SOLD)

I've got a pair of Pomoca Skins, they were recommended by @lattice towers. He told me they were the best. I bought them in 2020 and never opened them until tonight. It looks like they are SMALL, good for 160-169mm skis. I've got 174s and they are just too small. I'm not sure why I got the...

    Who has a Hot Tub?

Mrs. REALLY wants a hot tub. Me not so much. Who has one? What do you look for, when buying one? How much does it cost to heat? How much do you spend on maintenance or cleaning? Things to look out for? What else can you tell me? Who bought one and regretted it? Why? Who can't live without it?

    National Weather Service NWS

Thought it would be good to have a thread on this topic. Data from the NWS hasn't been loading with it's normal reliability. It's impacting our weather center.

    Thread Titles

The system naturally limits thread titles to 150 characters. I could reduce that limit with some custom programming, but I don't want to spend the money on it. For my OCD 150 is just too long. As a favor to me, please keep thread titles relatively short like under 75 or even 50. If you...

Basilica de la Sagrada Familia en Barcelona

We got back from 10 days in Spain, our graduation present for our daughter. I decided to live the trip vs blog it. I took less than 100 shots with my phone, and never touched my real camera. Three of the shots below are mine, and two were Zelda's. Two things I'll remember most about Spain...

    In Memory of My Dad

My dad passed at 2:30 am this morning. He was 92 years old. He had a good life, and he really didn't suffer too much at the end. My mom is 90, and together they were making it work living at home. They could get it done without too much help until recently. My sister really carried the load...

    DIN Settings

These are my wife's skis. DIN is set at 5. My daughter has been skiing a DIN 4 and wants to try these. But I don't see the nut to adjust the DIN. On the other skis, it's an obvious phillips head looking nut. Is that plastic thing a cover? How do I get it off?
