    Building a House with Wood

They do make a Zip panel for the roof. 5/8” thick with the brown/orange color coating.

Use Advantec 3/4” tongue and groove for your sub floor. It can get rained on during the construction process and not swell like regular OSB. (It’s an OSB product not plywood. Made by Huber, I believe, who also makes the Zip system.) Looking forward to a roofing materials thread in the coming...

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

I don’t see why not. Take a scrap of the siding or a piece of cardboard to cover the painted face, then spray the end cut with Kilz primer.

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

I would say yes, since the tyvek is applied over the OSB or the plywood.

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

I just use the standard 1/2” without the insulation. You have to adjust the air pressure and/or depth setting on the nail gun so the top of the nail is flush with the surface of the panel. Adding foam panels behind a traditional vinyl siding would give you your thermal break, but it wouldn’t...

Yes, can be exposed to the weather much longer than regular OSB or plywood.

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

No, the green coating (also comes in a reddish brown). Replaces the Tyvek. They do make it now with rigid foam insulation attached to it, but I’ve never used it.

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

Tyvek is ok, just make sure it’s installed right. All seams taped, no gaps, wrapped around the window and door rough openings with flashing tape around the nailing flanges. I just like zip panels better - tape and roll the seams and corners and tape around windows. Just make sure on the...

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

I’ve only used it on a couple jobs - most homeowners don’t go for it due to the added expense. Definitely use a housewrap (tyvek) behind it or better yet, Zip system sheathing.

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

Certainteed and Plygem are 2 of the big players in the business. Usually they have a thinner (cheaper) line for those on a budget and thicker ones which I’d recommend. There is also insulated vinyl siding which has foam insulation on the backside. It adds an R value to the siding and there...

Tell Me What You Know about Siding

Vinyl is final. Make sure to go with a heavier mil(thickness). Installation is everything though. The best vinyl siding installed by someone who doesn’t know their stuff will look like crap. If they know what they’re doing and use the fight accessories it’ll look like a million bucks.

    Building a House with Wood

I have Andersen 400’s in my house (built 23 years ago). Very happy with them. Hurricane ties are required to keep either the rafters or trusses from uplifting during high winds.
