    Backyard Sessions

Loved having a beautiful view of the snow in my front yard but the cold spell in my area is ending and the snow will be gone soon. Inspired by Ripitz’s artwork of backyard powder turns, I thought I’d have a little fun with the cross-country skis yesterday before it all melts away. It would...

    The bcXCD Thread

Glad your area got 6-7”. My area in southeast PA received ~3 inches. Just enough to convince me to take the rock skis out to a nearby (very) low angle, leaf-filled area yesterday afternoon. It was fun to play for one run (with no damage to the skis) but not enough cover to convince me to take a...

    Hunter Conditions

I miss Hunter West. Trail 44 (Westway) is still one of my favorite runs on the East Coast (even though it has been a while since I skied it). I actually have the attached photo of Trail 44 on a sunny powder day back in 2013 up in my office and it always brings a smile on my face to look at it...

Endo's All Time Favorite Skis Thread

I still remember when I tried a “shaped” ski for the first time at a Bridger Bowl demo day circa 2000/2001. That ski (Rossignol Bandit X) blew my mind. I always think about that day when I see someone in the lift line with Bandits. So thank you Sbob for still skiing old-school Bandits and...

I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad truly lived a full life. Thank you for sharing his story.

Nordic Combined Might Get Cut from Olympic Winter Games

Thanks for passing the article along. Disappointing. To me, events like the Nordic Combined are what I consider to be quintessential Winter Olympics events.

Where are you skiing this week?

Looks like Blue has three ways down today which is good enough for me. My plan is to get on the hill at around noon. It would be great if I’m there long enough to cross path with you. I’ll have a teal coat, black helmet and Rossignol E-88s (black with green on the tips version). I’ll do my best...

Where are you skiing this week?

Great that Blue is blowing snow. Tomorrow afternoon weather there looks promising. I'm going to try to get some turns in as well. Working late tonight to make it happen!

Where are you skiing this week?

Heading up to Elk tomorrow (i.e., Saturday) for their last day of the season. There won’t be ski hills within easy day-trip distance from my house open for much longer and I want to take advantage while I still can. Life is short. The ski season is even shorter!

    Winter Weather 2023/24

Skied Shawnee (PA) today and was surprised (and happy) that they blew snow as well last night. Glad that a number of hills are trying to keep the season going! Side note: Shawnee, at least today, had most trails open and good coverage. Let's see what the next week brings.....

    The bcXCD Thread

My neck of the woods (Southeast PA) received more than a dusting of snow this week for the first time since 2022. Finally enough snow to take out the cross country skis. Now I look out my window as the rain takes all the snow away. My only solace of watching the snow melt away is the fact that I...

    Catamount Conditions

I was up in the Berkshires last week and I wanted to stop by Catamount but decided on Jiminy and Berkshire East instead. Just one top-to-bottom black run being open would have been enough to convince me for a day at Catamount. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I just checked their website...

    Belleayre Conditions

Luckily my drive up to Belle was not as bad as my 5.5 hour drive back. The drive back home should have been ~4 hours if not for the rush hour accidents along the way. I have made the ~8 hour roundtrip to the Catskills for skiing multiple times all in one day (leave early in the morning, ski, and...

    Belleayre Conditions

I can understand why there may not be a lot of PA plates in the parking lot. It was a brutal 5.5-hour drive back home yesterday evening due to multiple rush hour accidents along the way. That said, a longer-than-expected-drive home was a small price to pay to get my first turns of the season in...

    Belleayre Conditions

I also was at Belleayre today. I agree that there was a light crowd. Here is a picture from when I stopped at Overlook for lunch a little after 11am Today was only my second time there. First time was about 7 years ago on a crowded Saturday when the conditions were not that great. Low crowd...

    New Gear for this Season

Unfortunately, I don’t have a specific ski to recommend but I agree that going shorter than 177 cm will definitely make a huge difference. When I hear terms like mellower ski that’s fun and easy, I think not as stiff (maybe no metal at all – which would also make them lighter). I do also think <...

    New Gear for this Season

I appreciate all the discussion about suggested skis for different conditions. I wish I had come across something like this last year when I was searching for a good ski for east coast trees. I thought I would pass along my ski search thought process since it may be relevant to the parts of this...

    Magic is Going RFID?

I’m going to miss Magic not having tickets with the wire wicket. Ripitz’s lift ticket photo reminded me of my first visit to Magic. I ordered my ticket online the day before and my ticket was waiting for me the next morning at the ticket window - literally. When I walked up to the counter, I saw...

Where are you skiing this week?

It's Plattekill for me as well tomorrow. PA hills are all closed and I'm up in NY visiting family so it's an easy decision. Looking forward to getting in a few more turns this season!

Best places to learn moguls/bumps on blue terrain?

Regarding Eastern PA mogul options – I agree with previous posts about Blue and Elk. The run Harvey mentioned at Blue Mountain sounds like Barney’s Bumps. It’s listed as a separate run on the trail map but it’s just moguls on the skier’s left side of Main Street. Agree that this is a good place...
