    Park City Ski Patrol Strike

Just because everyone is replaceable doesn't mean that everyone should be replaceable.

    Belleayre Conditions

I wonder if the State is legally obliged to accept the lowest bid, even if it's from a contractor who's got no experience or expertise in huge builds like this? I get why that would be a law but I also get why that would be a terrible law.

    ORDA's Biggest Mistakes

The impression I get (unadulterated pure virgin speculation) is that a small housebuilding firm in Westchester bid $4 million below what the large-scale builders who do giant state jobs were willing to bid. The State chose the lowest bidder. (They may even be legally obliged to choose the...

    Belleayre Conditions

After years of being the Belle of the Ball, they're having a brutal year so far.

Whatever happened to that yurt that was at the bottom of the Ski Bowl at Gore?

    Belleayre Conditions

WDST's Mountain Jam is going to be at Belleayre in June. It used to be at the F*** Vail place. I'm thoroughly stoked to see Khruangbin. (Khruangbin hit it big in 2010 but they somehow got nominated for Best New Artist at this year's Grammy Awards)

    Who has a Hot Tub?

I leave it on all year. It has a thermostat so it regulates itself. Our is a cozy 4-person tub so it's not much of an expense.

    Who has a Hot Tub?

We got one about six years ago. We got the cheapo model which does not have an on-board heater. As I understand it, it heats up the water by running it through the pump. It actually works great, it's significantly less expensive to purchase (about 5k IIRC) and to operate, and it's great in...

    Saigon

Nice! I hope you have a fun/meaningful trip. I've been to Hanoi. I've never seen anywhere in the world that's as difficult to navigate. If you go to bigger cities like Bangkok or Mumbai, it's crazy of course, but there's an internal logic which an observant traveller can pick up with some...

Absolutely wonderful conditions if you dig corduroy, which I do.

An end to an era: Goodbye Yurt

Isn't the entire point of a yurt that you can just fold it up and move it whenever you want?

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I'm no Gore expert, having only been there a few times. But a chairmate advised me not to go to the Ski Bowl specifically because the chair was so slow. So the opinion is out there. I ignored him and gave it a shot and I couldn't believe how slow that chair was. Maybe I was primed to think...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

At my home mountain, Belleayre, the very top reach of distance for one run is 1.75 miles and you have to really go out of your way to pull that off. At Gore, you can easily hit 3.5 miles (Straight Brook Lodge to the bottom of Burnt Ridge) but there's a lot of skating involved. In theory, one...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I don't understand how you could do that. I did 20k at Gore on Friday and I thought my legs were going to fall off. (I am in decent shape...I play soccer every week and run triathlons when the weather is nice.)

I really want to ice skating on their trail too.

    Belleayre Conditions

Wait, they groomed a trail that's no longer on the map? It's hard to see that as anything other than an invitation.

    Belleayre Conditions

Remarkably nice! Some of the mogul runs had a bit of ice but packed powder and corduroy everywhere else. They're basically 100% open. No lines anywhere.

    Belleayre Conditions

I was thinking that since it was raining at my house, it would be snowing at Belleayre. I thought wrong. Since it was wet and foggy (visibility was nil at times) and the snow was soft, I thought it would be a good day for moguls and woods. I thought right!
