    Gore Mountain Conditions

The J bar is a lot closer to the lodge than bear cub!! Just don’t sit on it. Put it just under your butt, hold on to the bar and let it pull you. Ask the liftie for help the first time. It’s not hard, but if you sit , you will fall. If you are taking a lesson the instructor will teach you. Tom

    Gore Mountain Conditions

The web site says the j bar will be open tomorrow. The pitch is comparable to bear cub but it’s much shorter. I think it would be what you are looking for. Tom

Reservations are preferred, but as long as there are instructors available for your skill level they will accept walk-ins. Tom

    Windham Mountain Going Private?

I think you nailed it. You could buy a mountain home at Stratton or Okemo and still have to deal with huge crowds on the weekend. No crowds. Short ride. That’s pretty nice. And I don’t think it’s really the billionaire with a helicopter that they are after. The Dr or lawyer pulling in $500k...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I skied the new lift on Saturday. It will be quite a bit easier than the sunway chair. When you get off the lift head to the right. It’s pretty narrow on the left going around the lift. Make sure to look uphill before entering the trail, some skiers will be coming down with quite a bit of speed...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

Full disclosure: I work as an instructor. I recommend a lesson. I have coached many beginner skiers down sunway their first time. And most of the other instructors have a lot more experience than I do. It sounds like you need to finish your turns. Try turning up the hill until you stop. Tom

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I agree that the new lift will be good for newbies. The lines at the old Poma could get really long during peak periods. Of course the extra capacity means more traffic on the trail. Tom

    ORDA's Biggest Mistakes

I worked for AT&T for 36 years and whenever they changed what they reported in earnings reports it was to hide something. Not saying that’s what ORDA is doing, but ….

    Windham Mountain Going Private?

Maybe a “paid parking” season pass at gore is the first step to establish an exclusive club. Seriously, the ski industry in general has been moving toward more exclusive. A lot of casual skiers (2-3 weekends a year) are dropping out due to cost. They don’t ski enough for a pass, but day...

Poll: What Catskill Ski Area is Most Different from the Other 3?

I vote belleayre since most of the trails are the same. I like belleayre but there isn’t much variety. Tom

Stuart talks to Alterra CEO (IKON)

I agree, but if your business objective is to get as much cash out of the resorts over a 10-15 year period then what’s going on makes sense. Tom

Poll: What management model for the best ski experience at ORDA Ski Areas?

I think leasing or selling would result in gore looking a lot like VT, both the good and bad. We would likely get better snowmaking along with larger crowds and higher prices. The cool gore vibe would disappear quickly. We would likely look back and think “And we complained about paid weekend...

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

Late to the thread if money is not an issue then I’d want ski in ski out and close enough to city/town with stuff to do other than skiing. But with two kids in NJ I’m not going anywhere unless I get divorced. Interesting that no one mentioned taxes when choosing their preferred location. Of...

A long time ago when I was in school, I learned that snow melts rapidly at 80F. Sometimes there is only so much that can be done when Mother Nature throws a wicked curve. To
