    Today's Hike

I kicked off my hiking season this weekend in the Canadian Cascades. The snow pack is rapidly disappearing at elevation—which is a bit concerning. On the plus side, I won’t have to wait until late July/August to hit some of the bigger objectives this year. Chilliwack Lake and the Northern...

    Today's Ride

I haven’t done any biking on Seymour or Fromme, yet. I mostly ride at Burke Mountain and Bert Flinn since they are both close enough to bike to. Eagle is also close but it’s pretty challenging terrain. This YouTuber does a really good job of capturing the trails locally. I’ve also done some...

    Today's Ride

I also ride a hard tail. I haven’t ever observed any knee pain as a result, and most of my riding is on techy, rocky/rooty trails in BC. I’d love a good dual suspension bike, but I currently can’t justify the costs to own and maintain one. Plus, I have a lot more technique to learn before I...

    Avalanche

It has been a very active week in the region, to say the least. Blackcomb - Disease Ridge (7th Heaven) Blackcomb - face across from Gem Stones Mt Currie - Pemberton

    F Vail

Looks like the collective outrage combined with the continuing mid-winter conditions in these parts have them reevaluating their spring operations. Glacier and Showcase are both open today.

    F Vail

Closing the Glacier Chair isn’t a huge deal as it is redundant as long as 7th Heaven is running, but closing the Blackcomb Gondi (especially on a powder day when conditions are the best they’ve been all season) is just stupid. It’s such a shame. Vail could actually make some money from W/B in...

    Spring Weather 2023

The weather in the northeast is so erratic! Ski areas have gone from everything open to total melt down in what…2 weeks?!

    British Columbia Conditions

There were some decent turns at W/B over the long weekend. Crowds were a little nutty at times, but such is Whistler on a holiday weekend. Still winter conditions above mid—and will be for the foreseeable future. Diamond Bowl Fraggle Rock Ripping first tracks on Dakine after the Glacier...

    Spring Weather 2023

That’s Lone Tree. It looks crazy filled in compared to normal seasons where there is a rock band down the top-center. Regarding LCC, I find it crazy that LCC doesn’t have any snow sheds like you find in Roger’s Pass or the Alps.

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

Bellingham is a cool town. Some parts remind me a bit of Saratoga—though the people are a bit more eccentric. I’d live there if I couldn’t live in BC. Summers are also banging in these parts.

    British Columbia Conditions

Last weekend, I did a tour outside Whistler—just after a storm rolled through. The snow was quite light in density, especially for this time of year. This is normally a pretty popular spot. Not sure where all the people were. Perhaps doing yard work? An atmospheric river is hitting the...

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

If the decision was purely about skiing, either Nelson or Revelstoke for the combination of big snowfalls, low skier density and endless touring opportunities. However, life is much more than just skiing and small, isolated towns such as these would feel quite suffocating after a while. I had...

    British Columbia Conditions

The Sea To Sky gondola, 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver, is a popular tourist destination for sightseeing. But the gondola also provides easier access to the alpine and notable summits such as Sky Pilot and Mount Habrich—shaving off just under 3000’ versus climbing from sea level. Thus, it...

ISO: Families in Whistler for Spring Break

Welcome Eric! I hope you have favorable weather for your visit. Here are some tips: • Whistlerpeak.com is a great resource for weather, conditions, lift and grooming status, etc. It’s much better than the Epic app. • Fatmap is great for getting to know the mountain • Whistler is the busier...

    East/West trail difficulty rating comparisons

Either east or west, the difficulty is modified by snow conditions, and western ski areas are not immune to poor snow conditions (hardpack, ice, obstacles due to low snowpack). For example, it’s not uncommon to find hardpack in the W/B alpine after freeze thaw conditions. Also, it is not...

    East/West trail difficulty rating comparisons

I would also add that, within each trail rating, there is a much wider range of difficulty at W/B than mountains in the east. For example, Blackcomb Glacier, seen below, is labeled as a blue. Meanwhile, there are plenty of blues that are more comparable to the blues you’d find at Gore or...

    East/West trail difficulty rating comparisons

Generally, the runs at W/B are more challenging than back east, though it depends on the run and the conditions on any given day. The double-blacks are on another level, however. They can involve big cornice drops, mandatory airs, cliffs, narrow chutes—depending on the run. Though, to be fair...
