I chose to settle down and buy property in Hunter because I wanted to live outside of NYC in the country with people I know. I'm tied to it because it's close to NYC and I've made friends with people from here. We maintain an apartment in Brooklyn NY and enjoy being able to be in NYC and in the...

Double fall line - if you can't self arrest and fall at speed where it's steep. You can go into the fence eventually. It's ugly AF.

You're correct on all accounts - I saw it happen. I miss my old places BUT I do love the newer restaurants(Jessies and Tabla come to mind). We don't need the ski area to help us. We just need people - which we have now. And new people! We are working to make our town healthy and...

Man - I hope Hunter/Tannersville becomes a "Vail town". Any kind of town would be awesome fro the Hunter Village haha... My house value has skyrocketed already. Businesses are starting up. It's kind of awesome. I'm hoping Vail turns the mountain antics around.

Dig or don't dig. Test or don't test. It's up to you guys. I don't have to go in the BC with you so it's not even an issue to me. Have fun.

RA's not wrong but that's what guides do - they take you to the best place that's safe based upon their knowledge. They know not to go to wind loaded bowls with documented weak layers. And if they get nervous - they dig. That why we pay them! :)

I agree - it's a lot of things, but it would've prevented him from going into the terrain and risk getting killed. From the report the layer was pretty evident. That's all I'm saying. Check it

Here's the Avi forecast from 7am that day. I'm not saying this is how people should've done something - I'm just saying this is how I approach back country riding. Take it or leave it. I do always wear a transceiver inbounds(on at the car and off at the bar) and shovel/probe in side country...

Thats where a lot of wind blown snow ends up. I was describing the snow. :) If there's wind-drifts/slab, I'm digging a pit or just avoiding completely. And at least do a transceiver check. I personally wont risk walking into a weak faceted layer situation. Maybe I'm just overly cautious...

But if skiing a fresh wind blown leeward side of a ridge - you need to check it out first. No matter if it's your first venture that season or other I would.

I actually laid out the reason why I would've dug a pit based upon his picture. I've taken the AVI 1 and 2 classes - I've backed off of riding because of digging pits. And it was a wise move based upon a layer of what we determined to be graupel and guess what? It slide that night... so...

First glance - lots of wind blown with potential loading. I would've dug a pit.
