Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

I like to believe that I can move anywhere. It's a matter of what I'm willing to give up, how I'm willing to live, etc.... It might seem nitpicky but it's important. I know some folks on this forum have just gone for it and dirtbagged for years at a time. I admire that. That said, I think it's...

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

We were skiing in Alagna two weeks ago. Not a good snow year for them but still just an amazing time. It's off the beaten path, super authentic, super small. I highly recommend it. https://www.alagna.it/en/

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I'm not sure when the last time you were in Wilmington was but it's far from withering. There are at least five restaurants open for dinner and another two breakfast spots. Property values have soared since the pandemic and although they have stabilized or even come down a bit, they're still...

    Poll: Parking at Ski Areas

I have never paid the annual fee but I have paid the daily fee before, especially when the car is full of folks willing to share the cost. I haven't used it in a while because I mostly ski early mornings these days so there's no need but when I did, it filled up on weekends but not during the week.

There was no enforcement of this at all when I was there last week.

Also looks like some more snow next week. Might be a nice March at WF...

I have skied to the bottom from Aiguille du Midi but it was a long time ago (35 years?). I love that place and need to get back there while I can still ski and climb reasonably well. One of my strongest memories of skiing as a kid was on one of our trips there. I must have been 13 or 14 and I...

This guy skis on the Mark IVs. Apparently Olins were the preferred skis of secret agents in the 80s.

I think we could start a movie ski chase thread....man I loved those old bond films when I was a kid.

I keep that tune on my ski playlist under the name "pornified bond theme"

    Things skiers do but shouldn't.

Beginner and intermediate skiers can't cover the 15+ feet of distance I'm giving them in a couple of heartbeats. That's why the issue is mostly with (some) racers or other very fast skiers. They are moving fast and they are very nimble. I don't expect this kind of consideration from...

    Things skiers do but shouldn't.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting it's not my responsibility to watch out for down hill skiers and thankfully it's not often that I'm passing racers. I'm just saying The Code is not enough. Ski like a mensch and watch out for people if you're going to do something unexpected, don't take up the entire...

    Things skiers do but shouldn't.

I'm mostly talking about hight traffic areas on intermediate terrain, think the narrow bit of Lower Valley just after the mid lodge. If you are making hard and sudden racing turns then the 15+ feet I'm giving you can evaporate pretty quickly. I am not by any means abdicating the responsibility...

    Things skiers do but shouldn't.

My pet peeve, especially at Whiteface, is racers making hard and sudden racing turns without glancing over their shoulders to see if anyone is behind them on narrow sections of a run. I give them as much distance as possible but I still have more close calls than I would like. It's just super...

Conditions were awful today. What terrible skiing. I didn't have any fun at all. I especially hated Skyward and Cloudspin this morning, Makenzie was also no fun. And don't get me started on the glades...

    Whiteface Conditions

I woke up then and thought the same thing but we have about 5 inches of new snow here in Wilmington now. The mountain is claiming 10 inches of new snow already and it's still coming down pretty heavy.

    Whiteface Conditions

Lookout below is tough relative to other black runs at WF. A lot of that has to do with the fact that conditions on the run are rarely good. But even in good shape, I would say it's trickier than most other blacks. Hoyt's is much more gentle and would probably be a "double blue" in some...

That's, right. See my post above. It does get you in a bit higher but only a couple of turns.

I straight-up asked ski patrol if I could just wait for another party and they were fine with it. Then I just followed up the first group that came along. So yeah, if they're open and you have avy gear, it doesn't seem like a real issue. When I say, follow up, I mean it too. When I skied the...
