    Fall Weather 2023

For anything more than 48 hours out OpenSnow is criminally optimistic. Still, I like the stoke and continue to be a paying customer. Fingers crossed.

starting to wonder when they will start making snow...How long before opening did they start blowing last year? If I remember it wasn't long before they opened. I get so crazy impatient these last few weeks before the season.

I was able to regularly park there last season weekday mornings provided I arrived before 8:30. Weekends I would arrive a little bit earlier. I just hike up next to the magic carpet and then ski down to the base, the payoff being when I leave the hill I can sometimes ski to my car.

Does anyone here know what the hours of operation will be for the new lift? If it opens at 8:30 my follow up question is if they will push the opening time of LWF lift up to 8:30 from 9AM. It would be a nice option for morning skiing as the parking up at Bear Den is great at that time.

    New Gear for this Season

Nice setups! I have the Salomon Shift bindings on my 96s for the same purpose. I use Black Crows for my touring setup too, the Orb Freebirds with Alpinist bindings.

    New Gear for this Season

I love the Ripstick. I ride the 88s here in the east and bring the 96 when I'm heading west. I like a light playful ski. I used to love the Bushwhackers before those were discontinued.

    Going Down Big

"I literally don't see any recognizable hazards that I can't control" Oh boy....the mountains had to punish them for that one. At least they got off easy. Super fun watch. thanks for posting!

    Windham Mountain Going Private?

The opening scene of that video is shot down Third Street in my home town, Laguna Beach, California. That building on the left at the bottom of the hill was the phone company back then, now it's luxury condos. Laguna used to be a sleepy artist colony and surf town with a large gay community...

Triple Black Diamonds at Big Sky

Climbing grades vary quite a bit from place to place and the variations can sometimes be consequential. Climbing in the Gunks is a good example of this but at least it has a reputation for stiff grades. Even worse, climbing gyms today have incredibly soft grades and I do think this is because...

Triple Black Diamonds at Big Sky

JH has had double blues for at least several years also. I have always thought of them as similar to reds in Europe.

    Bar up or bar down?

I'm bar down, especially when there's a foot rest. At the end of the ride I like to play bar-raising chicken with the other passengers, probably not very smart.

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

Generally you don't tip but I tipped 40 to make it an even 500. He seemed both surprised and delighted.

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

Well there were services online but I just asked the hotel we were staying at if they had a recommendation and they recommended Giuliano. I sent him an email with our flight information and he was there holding a sign when we arrived. He didn't even accept any payment until he brought us back 10...

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

We did fly into Milan. We took a transfer service, basically a taxi, back and forth. It was expensive (460 euro RT) but still less than renting a decent car and it was our anniversary so we splurged on a few things. I think driving ourselves would have been fine, especially given the lack of...

Skiers: If You Could Move Anywhere... ?

(I had to Google translate that.) This was a 10th wedding anniversary trip so it didn't seem appropriate. I'll tell you what though, if the southern hemisphere has a good season I plan on going in August. That would make this a 4 (or 5 if I can swing both Chile and NZ) continent season for me...

    Whiteface Conditions

Pretty firm today. Softened up in the afternoon but still very fast skiing except for the bottom. Good news is still a ton of snow.
