Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Nearer REALLY doesn't count!!! I guess I have to keep repeating this explanation: And Harvey staying at his place and seeing a few seconds of solar corona will kick himself for not being willing to drive a trivial distance to Indian Lake where it would be a couple of minutes. Forbes online...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

I just got home from 3 weeks of skiing in Utah and Colorado. I'm just now reading preliminary forecasts, haven't seen them for Mexico yet. We will have a car so we can drive over the mountains toward Durango if necessary. Plan A is the 8,800 foot high point of that road.

Preliminary cloud cover forecast: https://www.pivotalweather.com/eclipse2024/?m=nbm&p=qpf_012h_tle_4-prob0005&r=us_state_ny This is very favorable, and there is also a rationale for it, an Omega Block. 8 days out is too early to be counting your chickens, BUT…… Some of New Yorkers' inertia on...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

A thick cloud out gets as dark as about 30-45 minutes after sunset. But the unique views of solar corona etc. are not visible. Thin cirrus cloud will obscure the outer corona but other phenomena (inner corona, Diamond ring, solar flares) are still visible.

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

This is exactly what we do with the international travel for eclipses. We usually hang around for other attractions in the region for typically 2-3 weeks. But the current situation for Northeasterners is rare and lucky. Time and $$ commitment is minimal, so as with those TGR posters it's hard...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Few people on this forum seem willing to take seriously the recommendation of a nutcase who was traveled outside North America for 14 eclipses. Perhaps other skiers on TGR in 2017 would be more persuasive. TGR: More comments, all from one of those 32 pages: These are all skiers who knew...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

I found on First Tracks a copy of the one/inch/30 inch post TGR had on its 32 page eclipse thread. . The first 20 pages before August 21 were the usual mix of some people who were going plus the also expected traffic/crowd paranoia and snark. The 12 pages after August 21 were quite...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Being clouded out is like maybe a 3-inch day. Thus the effort of looking at weather forecasts 2-3 days out is important. Again, this is something skiers do all the time.

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Some of you should read the 2017 testimonials from skiers on TGR, like this one. There are about 5 pages of testimonials on TGR. The reference post I can't find was from someone who said a partial eclipse was like one inch new snow and a total eclipse was like 30 inches. And the reference I...

Yes. That also means it is unsafe to look at the sun without the glasses anytime during the eclipse at Gore.

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Yes, because it's only as bright as a full moon. 6,000 per hour! that would be very impressive. Annual showers like Perseids in august, Geminids in Dec., etc. are typically more like 100 per hour. The November Leonids can be much more, but unfortunately only over a 2-3 year period every 33...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Don't be sorry about asking questions. Total solar eclipses across the continental US are so rare (1979, 2017, 2024, 2045) the vast majority of people only hear about them a few weeks in advance like now and need to ask basic questions. That is unfortunate because some people farther away could...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Yes, but they will not let you up the mountain after 2PM. Absolutely not as it's outside totality, which we have known since November when they first announced their atrocious plan to lure people who might otherwise drive a trivial 10 miles north to see the real thing. The eclipse shadow is...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Have you seen a total solar eclipse? If not, you are not qualified to make that statement, so please don't mislead other people. The same applies to those who think it's OK to view 99% from Gore or under the clouds.

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

So that applies also to the 3 foot dump at Snow Ridge scenario with nothing at Gore? Actually I'm quite sure that's true. Harvey and I are exact opposites in vacation mentality. I would never own a vacation home because I wouldn't want to be tied to the same place especially for skiing...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Sorry yes you do. I have been to 15 of them and the clouded out one in 2019 wasn't much different than the 99% scenario at Gore (no solar corona, diamond ring, solar flares, shadow bands, etc.). I really don't understand why people who have never seen one continue to insist that 99% or total...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

In terms of length of totality you should be closer to the center line than to an edge. In the area north of Gore, centerline gets 3 minutes 26 seconds totality while halfway to centerline (Long Lake, Mt. Marcy) get 3 minutes 3 seconds. A quarter of the way to centerline at Indian Lake gets 1...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

You are asking the wrong question. Being on a hill makes a difference only if you are thousands of feet above the horizon, as we were in Jackson in 2017. The most important factors are the weather, the weather and the weather. You must look at the forecast a couple of days ahead, THEN decide...

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

Closer for an total solar eclipse is like being in the parking lot for the Super Bowl and not inside the stadium. You might as well be at home hundreds of miles away. I cannot emphasize more what a debacle Gore is creating for itself. Somebody with credibility needs to head off this disaster...
