    Building a House with Wood

Happy wife, happy life. The latest thing is bidet toilet seats, heated too. I almost did a hers and his side by side toilets when I designed my bathroom. 😁 I often get blamed for a wet seat , what she doesn’t realize is the towel bar is next to the toilet . I don’t use that bathroom anymore.

    Building a House with Wood

What @freeheeln said. I had an old grey Kohler toilet that was getting time to replace. A customer bought a new home that had two new white Totos they remodeled the bathrooms and didn’t want the toilets so timing was perfect. I also recently replaced my tile shower and changed color to white...

    Building a House with Wood

Toto , Elongated with a slow close seat. This brings back memories, my wife and I were picking out kitchen cabinets and my two boys were running around like normal kids. Youngest had to go , so there was a showroom toilet with the seat up and well he used it, fortunately not number two. 😁

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

Good advice Having a dual fuel setup with a heat pump set for outdoor low ambient shutdown has some risks. Reminds me of a humorous story , my friend called saying his heat pump wasn’t running. We had lots of cold and snow for an extended time then a quick warm up. The snow had accumulated on...

Not necessarily, they can work together while keeping the power supply separate.A quick wiring sketch. You may have some differences but adding an outdoor thermostat to the heat pump and connecting a relay to the wiring to operate the boiler. You probably have some zones attached to the boiler...

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

I personally like having some redundancy by keeping the two systems separate. I have a saying “They don’t make junk like they used to." Stuff breaks more quickly than it used to. The efficiency of equipment is much higher but more vulnerable to power surges. It pains me to replace old mercury...

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

I was assuming you had a gas furnace tied in with the heat pump. People sometimes interchange furnace and boiler, you do not have a duel fuel system. Boilers are used with hydronic baseboard systems, but can be used with a hydronic coil in the ductwork for backup heat. Totally fine with a heat...

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

A two stage thermostat will kick in backup heat with a temperature 2° lower than what it’s set for. If you walk into a cold house and bump up the temperature a conventionally programmed thermostat will automatically turn on backup. That’s fine for a regular heat pump but bad if you have a gas...

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

I like this idea but they have to be wired properly so that the heat pump doesn’t simultaneously run with the gas furnace. The heat pump coil is downstream of the furnace so if the entering air temperature is say 140° with a restriction on the air filter, that translates to 540 psi with a 410a...

There’s a component called an EEV on multi zone units. Electronic expansion valve , maybe glitching?

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

Fill it in with more ground. If your builder has equipment still on site maybe hit it now pretty aggressively. Not sure if you still have a frost line. This brought back a crazy memory. I did a two story addition on a home. The exterior was completed and all that remained was backfilling. My...

There’s a lot of units that only work down to 5° . You have to pay extra to get the units that work down to-15°

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

New construction it’s a good idea because nobody compacts the soil when they backfill. The downside to wall brackets is the compressor noise transfers into the house. As quiet as mini splits are there’s still some noise. I give the customer the option, by the time I get there the ground has settled.

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

Wind ? The fan blows across the outdoor coil to facilitate energy transfer. So wind should help performance. Some units have quirks. I had a dual unit that would blow cooler air from 20-40° . The homeowner was an engineer and had all kinds of temperature data and what he said was 100% correct...

Or a loose screw, put your hand on different places when it’s running. It doesn’t take much vibration to make lots of noise.
